Help! I've lost control! I'm overdosing on instruments! Will my brain explode?[More:]For a long time now I've wanted oboe lessons, and am now finally in a financial position to do so. I'm going to do it! Yes, I know I am! I so don't need to, but I am anyway!! But I'm already taking violin lessons, and my teacher has also offered to spend part of that lesson time on learning the viola. I'm also noodling a bit on the piano. For the record, I have given up the idea of trying the flute, at least for now. Will learning these instruments all at once be detrimental to advancing on one or all of them? Will it be helpful? How have you dealt with learning multiple instruments? I love instruments! Aaaagh!

Why am I spending all this time on playing music, when I should/could really be looking for a boyfriend?! Much less self-absorbed behavior!!
Don't worry about that throwaway comment at the end--when it's time for you to look for a bf, you will. And playing music is a beautiful way to spend time.

You are my long lost twin. I even wrote a (quite stupid) song about writing love songs instead of looking for a love life.

Don't worry about it, maybe music is your boyfriend.

It's just a matter of how much time you have to devote to each. Obviously spending an hour a day practicing one instrument will go further than 15 minutes on each of four.
I'm a guitar player but always wanted to learn piano just because it seems more "linear" and better for learning and applying music theory (chord construction, modes, etc).
Or if it's more the one-man-band thing you're looking for, I'd go with knee cymbals, harmonica, and violin, with a backpack bass drum tied in to your shoe.

(Holy SHIT, rmless2, that song is amazing! How have I never heard of this band before?)

My dad played the oboe, its a pretty demanding instrument. When I had my adult resurgence in learning an instrument I had to just focus on one, I didn't feel I could get myself to a point of making the music I wanted if I was dividing my time. I know a lot of crazy good musicians who are so good at their primary (or first, or whatever) instrument that they can easily pick up others without compromising their skills on their main axe. If I was in that position I'd probably explore a couple more instruments.

I love them, BP! They were all the hype about two years ago and then not much since.

I think it depends on what your goal is. If you want to get proficient enough to play comfortably in, say, adult chamber groups, then you really should pick one and focus practice time.

If you want to get good enough to wow your friends at parties, or play with pickup bands for fun, then I don't see the harm in diversifying.

I know that moving back and forth from viola to violin really confused me, back when I still played - they require the same movements but the scales are different, so I struggled with sight-reading music. I didn't have the same problem moving from violin to clarinet, because the motions that make, say, a "C" note are very different.

Do it! Oboes - heck, all double-reed instruments - have that appealing haunting sound.

Haunting sound from the Farting Bedpost? The instrument named after a bundle of sticks? You're mad.

I'm overdosing on bicycles.... I'm up to 7 or 8 now, although a couple are just for parts and a couple I bought with intentions of fixing them up and selling them. If there weren't 4 licensed drivers in the house I'd be tempted to park my car in the driveway and give my side of the garage over to the bikes.
