The Blue Hits A Home Run over at MetaFilter, chunking express posted a wonderfully written, vivid account of life in the dying American city of Detroit. I know that many of you don't frequent The Blue, but this is totally worth your while.
I guess living in this area for more than a decade has left me a bit jaded but I don't find this article all that special. Just another the yearly someone from the east or west coast flies in for a few days long slow death of Detroit article. Meh.
"We park his car far away from the buildings we crash, to avoid detection by police (not that we ever see any)." The cops can't be bothered to watch over empty buildings. It's private security you have to watch out for. They will take a ball-peen hammer to all the glass in your vehicle as a trespassing fine.
I was underwhelmed as well. If you know Detroit none of this is at all new, unfortunately. Nothing wrong with the article, I just didn't see what all the fuss was about.
I can count three instances in my life where I was really scared because I thought something bad was about to happen to me. One of these involves being in downtown Detroit at night. Shudders.
