The Blue Hits A Home Run over at MetaFilter, chunking express posted a wonderfully written, vivid account of life in the dying American city of Detroit. I know that many of you don't frequent The Blue, but this is totally worth your while.
I just got a comment deleted from the green so I'm bitter now but I'll get over it.

I guess living in this area for more than a decade has left me a bit jaded but I don't find this article all that special. Just another the yearly someone from the east or west coast flies in for a few days long slow death of Detroit article. Meh.

Charlie is worth checking out though.

"We park his car far away from the buildings we crash, to avoid detection by police (not that we ever see any)." The cops can't be bothered to watch over empty buildings. It's private security you have to watch out for. They will take a ball-peen hammer to all the glass in your vehicle as a trespassing fine.

I had to fly through Detroit on my way back here, wish I could have gone out and seen the de-urbanization first hand, but didn't have enough time.

I read the first page and thought it was going to depress the hell out of me, so I didn't read it.

I was underwhelmed as well. If you know Detroit none of this is at all new, unfortunately. Nothing wrong with the article, I just didn't see what all the fuss was about.

Is this even exclusive to Detroit? Isn't Chicago in a similar situation?

Chicago is nothing like Detroit but many parts of Indiana are as bad or worse.

Reading that article reminded me a lot of Anathema.

I can count three instances in my life where I was really scared because I thought something bad was about to happen to me. One of these involves being in downtown Detroit at night. Shudders.
