Ask Mecha: So I Have These New Chairs and I would like any info y'all can find on them. [More:]I got them at the local used furniture cheap-o one-step-above-Goodwill place. I've been Googling and it seems that Knoll is a mostly office company that's noted for working with designers. These have tags under the seats that say 1979 Knoll Furniture and a New York showroom address and a red stamp across all of it that says KNOLL. I'm curious. Are they done by some designer and if so, who?
Here, you can see them both in my living room:

"American architect and furniture designer Florence Knoll Bassett was born Florence Schust in Michigan in 1917. She studied architecture under the likes of Eero Saarinen (at the Kingswood School on the campus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan) and Mies van der Rohe (at the Armory Institute in Chicago). After working briefly for Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, she met and married Hans Knoll, who had established the Hans G. Knoll Furniture Company in New York, becoming a full business and design partner. Knoll helped to re-direct the company toward a more modernist, international style. As an architect, Florence Knoll's own designs are cool, angular and reserved, reflecting her modernist sensibilities."

I have nothing to add but to say that these chairs are FABULOUS and your living room looks like it's straight from a magazine.

Knoll is a fabulous and respected furniture and textile company. They've had dozens of famous architects and designers work for them over the decades. They hold the rights to many famous pieces of furniture: the Wassily chair, the Eames lounge chair, the Barcelona chair (you'll know these if you're a design nerd), etc.

I don't know the specific designer of your chair, but it's similar in style to a lounge chair designed by a guy named Bruce Hannah in the '70s.

Nice find!

And your living room is GORGEOUS!

Do these new chairs mean that you no longer have this thing of beauty in your home?

COOL. They're awesome! I bet if you posted the Q at Apartment Therapy someone could give you the scoop.

Specklet, you're a genius. Those are my chairs, absolutely, except that sometime in the last 30 years, somebody painted the frames black. Cool! Now I know!

Oh and thanks for the compliments on the living room! The actual occupants like it just fine.

Love those chairs! And your new home looks really great, MGL. Really comfy and inviting. Makes me wanna hop a train for Asheville.

The actual occupants like it just fine.

Clearly, that 4th chair is just begging for another cat or dog.
