I had this dream last night about a new kind of fundraiser event. I wonder if it would be a good idea. Details inside.[More:]So in the dream, the event was called something like "10 x 10" or "10 times 10." It was held at a bar with a large room. You paid $10 to get in. And then, there were 10 10-minute presentations by 10 different experts on useful things to know: like, how to make a great martini. How to tie a bow tie. How to do magic tricks. How to arrange flowers.

So basically you hung out at the bar drinking, learned 10 things, only had to pay attention 10 minutes at a time, and there you go.

Not sure where to go with this but it's kind of tempting to try this event format at some point. In the dream, it was a lot of fun, but then it was a dream.

What things would you want to learn in 10 minutes from an expert? (and getcher mind outta the gutter...)
That sounds pretty cool actually. I can see the challenge of coming up with 10 actually interesting talking points though (although, you have some great ones to start...if I had a brain, I might be able to come up with another couple, but sadly...yup, brainless.)

When you learn stuff while drinking, you tend to forget it by morning, which means you have to learn it again....which insures repeat customers. Very shrewd, Miko, very shrewd....

Most of the things I want to learn how to do involve power tools, which aren't probably the best things to demonstrate while drinking. (Unless your name is Bubba and you precede your demonstration with "Hey y'all, look at this.") but I love this idea.

I'd love a cooking-themed one. How to braise properly, how to make a roux, how to cut vegetables crazy-fast with a chef's knife.

Maybe that last one is also not good to do while drinking.

I was reading about something similar, only with artists. Did someone post it here? A bunch of writers and visual artists (I think) would get together once a month, the public was invited, and then the artists would get 10 minutes to present their work, either with a reading or slides or whatever. No signing up in advance, from what I remember; just whoever was there, got to present. I thought it sounded very cool, but that's obviously more of a presentation than a lesson sort of thing.

Hmmmm.... for the lessons, I might want to learn some sort of vocal trick, like an accent or yodeling or something. And how to build or make something tangible, like a bird house or wind chime or coffee mug. And maybe some Bob Ross-esque painterly trick. And rules and tips for a card game. And memorizing a short poem or monologue.

1) Kitchen knife skills
2) Photography - take better photos
3) Duct tape skills
4) Massage tips
5) Towel Origami
6) Balloon Animals
7) Playing With Food - radish roses, watermelon basket
8) Card tricks
9) Gift wrapping
10) Pack a suitcase

It's a fun idea. I'd pay $10 for this .. sounds like a good time! It would be pretty easy to customize the presentations for the group attending ... you could make it more sports oriented, or aim it at parents, chefs, gardeners or outdoors-types, whatever. Plus it might be a way for the presenters to drum up some business, ya know? Like whomever does the flower-arranging demo might end up getting some new business at their shop. Everyone wins!

Nice, simple; and useful. Avoids all the typical hype and crap laden stuff and actually produces conversation and learning. 10 x 10.

10 minutes of spices and seasonings.

Speed seminaring?

(But aren't these a little like Longaberger/Amway/ etc. parties?)

I don't know what I want to learn, but I just wanted to say that I love this idea.

Great idea, I'd so totally do it if you threw ten-minute seminars of slightly obscure things to know in there. And by slightly obscure I mean those little things like why carrots are orange. Someone could have a ten minute slide-show with old art on the dude who created them, and why with neat illustrations of how from the period! Very entertaining ten minutes.

Love this idea.
Balloon animals, absolutely.
Simple magic tricks
How to play poker
Fold a paper crane

get the subjects from what's available, i.e., find some experts among your volunteers, and ask what they can teach.

Well, here in pdx, you can find Ignite and Pecha Kucha Night which kind of function along those same lines...

So, it definitely seems workable.

And I LOVE finding out how people make things - glass blowing, book binding, taxidermy - all things I'd watch endlessly, but a whole bunch in a row? Superfun.
