Hedwig or Rocky Horror?
ROCKY!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 10 January | 00:23
Definitely Rocky. I saw Hedwig live and it was great fun but the movie didn't really capture it at all.
posted by arse_hat 10 January | 00:27
sakura on pies account says:

HED FUCKING WIG!!!!!

About an infinity times better by any measure!

(Also, I hope this post was somehow related to my earlier allusion to the same. :D )

Rocky. Is this actually a question?

Dude - Hedwig.

RHPS is cool and all, but all the drama geeks still go to that one.

It's rare you find the drama geek who's all "yeah - that whole genderbending coudn't-quite-hack-my-cock-off right story arc really speaks to me personally!"

Much better movie, also. The tunes are a toss-up, though.

Which comment, sakura? This is independent of anything. I snagged Hedwig tonight in a 3 for 2 sale -- the others, Lou Reed's Berlin and s Petula Clark TV special.

Right now, I'm on the fence until I watch Hedwig again. Rocky has major plot problems but great music that stands on its own. Hedwig has a great story with well-integrated songs, only one or two of which stand on their own. Both have great characters and visual impact.

The european ending for Rocky is far superior to the american. Janet looks so lost while Brad seems to be rediscovering his self-confidence.

Speaking of plot, I noticed just this week that Tommy and The Wall tell the exact same story.

Rocky Horror. It influenced the course of the 70s, no kidding.

Relatively few people have seen or heard Hedwig, great as it may be.

Knowledge of Hedwig (whether or not someone has actually seen it) is a litmus test -- for something anyway, I'm not sure just what.
posted by Ardiril 10 January | 01:20
And that's what's great about Rocky Horror... eventually it WASN'T a litmus test, and all the freaks from the suburbs got to "Don't dream it, be it" as well. I bet it has changed more lives than Hedwig ever did.

For obvious reasons, I hate Rocky Horror.

BOTH!

Hedwig: because it allowed John Cameron Mitchell to make "Shortbus", one of my favorite movies of all time. Shut up.

(Also, have you seen Tim Curry lately? Not so pretty now.)

Jesus Christ, people. Double feature.

Exact a mundo.

I know of Hedwig but have never seen it. Rocky Horror I've seen only at home, but it's fun.

Hedwig.

...with a side of Velvet Goldmine. (don't hurt me)
posted by lysdexic 10 January | 17:26
Both, but Rocky if I had to pick. Mostly because of the stand-alone songs that Ardiril mentioned, but also because I just find those actors sexier I guess.

sakura again - (if I switch profiles, the buffers on vids stop and I'm too lazy to log out and look up my password...)

@adiril Made a post earlier here a few hours before your post. Weird coincidence!

I understand that Rocky really moved a lot of people, so as far as "how many people have been affected by this," yes, it's Rocky.

But if it's a question of which movie is superior cinema, it's Hedwig. Sure, I didn't get to throw any toast, or see Meatloaf as dinner, but by the end, I felt like I could better understand how hard it is to be transsexual/gay/gender-queer. It was a real experience of the human condition. Beautiful.

Wouldn't the better comparison be Rocky/Buffy, the Musical?
posted by pieisexactlythree 11 January | 14:31
All I have ever seen of Buffy was the original movie. I didn't know they made a musical.
posted by Ardiril 11 January | 16:56
There was a musical episode in season 6. It was pretty great. You can find the musical numbers on youtube. But it probably won't mean much if you didn't watch the series.

Hedwig. (And this from a former full-on Rocky Horror nerd.) I love the music, and often find myself wistfully singing "Wicked Little Town" as I do dishes or leaf through research texts.

I'm just about to put on the Buffy musical episode as a cleaning companion --- I love it and often use it as the peppy, poppy motivating background music to spur me through chores and work. During the last stretch of the semester's writing, I just closed myself into the bedroom every day with a stack of texts, the laptop, and played that one episode over and over, singing along as I typed.

Agreed that the real beauty of it --- the seamless and economical use of the musical format to further the plot while respecting the established characters' personalities --- will be invisible to anyone who doesn't watch the show.

Those who do like it, though, should check out Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which I've been watching rabidly since we acquired it before Christmas, and which never fails to crack me up.

Hi Elsa, I too am a geek! I just bought the complete box set of Buffy, Angel and ordered no less than THREE Dr Horrible DVDs. I also have it on iTunes. Two of those DVDs are gifts though...

I just got the Dr. Horrible DVD today, actually

No joke, I've done this exact combination. It is amazing. (Although so is Citizen Kane/Velvet Goldmine)
