A friend of my sister's just saw the face of the Prophet (Muhammad) and Allah on the side of the moon last night (posted on Mefi about Muharram). And she happens to be non-muslim... so, what have you seen on the moon at night lately, or anywhere else for that matter?
Bunny! OMG!

I always see Jackie Gleason.

You're right, that is pretty cool (what is god [if he exists, close to the bunny] I mean: we rule!). And yeah, Jackie Gleason--oh, my, fucking, god!

The moon is a Dutch cartoonist?

I'm sure that I saw the words "confirmation bias" spelled out in Comic Sans on the moon last night.

Everything looks exactly like me and reminds me of me and tings I have and people I know and stuff I like, including the moon.

I saw Lipstick Thespian the other night but he looked a bit dyspeptic.

Humans, to be reductionist, are basically just face detectors. It's no wonder we see faces in everything.

I have a neuroscientist friend who would agree with you. His research was on how babies recognize faces. Turns out that if you put a crudely drawn smiley face in front of an infant (that being something with two eyes, a nose, and a mouth), their brains recognize it in the same way they recognize a real face. But if you mess with the drawing -- give it one eye, put the mouth on the forehead, and the nose on the side of the face (or something like that) -- it doesn't register the same way in the brain.

So yeah, from our very earliest stages out of the womb, our brains recognize faces in everything that looks remotely face-like.

Oh yeah, my n=1 baby lights up when she turns over her one rattle with a smiley face on it.

So my anecdote matches up with mudpuppie's friend's scientific study, making it even more useful. Heh.

No, no, cortex, that's a mondegreen.

Oh no no no no!

For some reason I find that Quizno's spongmonkey thing profoundly disturbing. I'm not sure why - but something about the messed-up face and weird eyes is really scarily haunting to me. When the commercial used to come on TV I would have to leave the room or switch channels.

Yeeeek!
