Should I keep the girl home from school on Inauguration Day? [More:]I was thinking we could get some special snacks, maybe make cookies in the shape of something and just veg out and watch the festivities. I just feel the need to mark the day and give her the ability to someday say, "I remember the day Obama took office, my mom kept me home and we...."
Sure.

I'm for it, jrossi. I think it's a damned good idea.

It WILL be a special Inauguration in my opinion. And I see no harm in marking the day for your children.(If you feel she will remember it.)
Mine are 20 and 13 and the teachers they both had in elementry school encourged ANY family time.
Days off don't count till Jr.high/High school!
But,now,I guess, my 20 yr old will celebrate her own way.
My 13 yr old is still "under the influence" LOL

Any kind of memorable event day with the parents is a good thing. It builds the anchors that you will both hold on to in the years to come. Do it.

It's sure to be happier than the day my mom let me stay home after John Lennon was shot! Do it.

Some of the absentee notes my sons had in grade school included "Up until midnight at the victory party for the new Member of Parliament", "Out on Greenpeace boat while dad was the photographer of an industrial pollution protest", and "up late at powwow where members of the Latin American Workers Group met with members of the Anishinaabemowin".

I'm a teacher, and I'm pretty much throwing an Inaugural ball at my Polish apartment - yay time differences! jrossi4r, in the name of all educators, I hereby sign your permission slip to allow your child to stay home.

See, she's got a permission slip. Keep her home!

I think it's a GREAT idea. And you can tell her, "This will give the other kids a chance to catch up to you." My dad told me that once when we left for vacation a few days early and it made me feel so special and smart.

I'm glad you posted this. My son is only 2 but I'll remember this when he gets older and something special happens that I want him to celebrate.

Let us know what the plans are!

My wife is staying home from work and watching. I'm not although doubtless I'll follow it from work.

jrossi4r, by all means keep her home.

Plus, it would be 9 kinds of hell to actually be a "regular" person trying to be there and watch it, so TV is far better, imo.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. It sends a real message to her about what you consider important: her, family time, history, progress.

I wonder though - is it being home that's important? Because it seems like a lot of communities are setting up some neat events around the day. For instance, my public library is going to have a room open with TVs and refreshments from 10-4 so people can watch the festivities. And one of the local bars is having a concert with marching-band music and comedy performance that evening (not that you should take your kid to a bar, just an example). I wonder if you two would have fun going out together to an event where others are celebrating, too.

Yay for truancy permission slips! The 20th is a day the mister works from home, so I'm planning to kidnap him to the living room to watch it.

Does anyone have a link to a schedule of the day's activities television-wise?

Or, see if the school has any events planned, and help her class watch the inauguration & have a party. It's gonna be a great day!

Huh? Why would you do that? Send her ass to school. She can watch it on youtube/read about it on wikipedia later.
