Drunk driver NYE crashes into my best friend's kid story... [More:]My good friend's youngest daughter is my daughter's best friend (and may as well be my niece and her sister). The initial girl is 14 and my daughter is 10, and this gal has helped inform my daughter of the realities of life including bras, periods, etc. with gentleness and practicality.

The car she was in coming home on NYE got T-boned by a drunk driver in a big truck. Broken jaw, sternum, 2 ribs, and pelvis. Glass embedded in her skin for a couple more weeks. This girl is 14 years old and cute/quirky.

She lived! Thanks to her seatbelt. She had bruised lungs and got helicoptered to the hospital. Her parents were across the street at my home when the news arrived.

She's a strong and lovely young lady. Thankfully, she's been healing at a near miraculous rate.

She's had a hard few days, but the hospital decided to send her home on Saturday afternoon. Too early, a bunch of us think, considering that she was in ICU Thursday and had jaw surgery Friday morning, but the doctors at the hospital said send her home. WTF? She's still got glass in her hair!

Whatever, she's alive and healing well. Also, she's one of the most incredible teenagers I've ever met. Kind, generous, good.

Any whuffles and good wishes sent to this gal are appreciated and worthy.

I've been busy channeling my anger into goodwill and health. It's difficult, but worth every bit.
Drunk driving. Gah.
I'm glad to hear she's, all things considered, ok.

Healing mojo on the way. And what CF said - GAH!

Thank goodness she's alive and okay (relatively speaking)!

Whuffles to the poor sweet dear-so happy to hear she will be okay!

(I understand dealing with the anger. A few years ago my car-with my husband in it-was totalled by a drunk driver. Thankfully my husband was only bruised, battered, and got his teeth chipped a wee bit. He would never letr me see my car afterwards because he thought I would freak out. But heck, he got out okay, right? Oh, and I hope someone discusses with a lawyer the proper compensation for this young girl, hint hint.)

Just figured out how to retrieve my lost password, thanks Taz, and I will soon be using my good sense to send your young and cute friend all the love and heeling she needs. 14 is too young to meet with such accidents, but I'm glad to know she's healing so well. My mom will be glad to hear this too and I'll tell her to pray for her as well. Much love, lilywing13! And friend!!!

My idea of charitable giving is giving a beating to anyone who even thinks about driving drunk. You might save a life!

Wow, how terrible. A friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver several years ago in Houston.

I will say hooray for seatbelts, though - a friend's sister-in-law was recently in a very similar accident (T-boned) and she was not wearing a seatbelt. She is in very, very bad shape and will be having surgery to completely rebuild her spine next week.

Thank you for all the kind words and thoughts. And yeah, they've already been talking to a lawyer.

Wow, I'm glad she's on the road to recovery!

It's understandable that only a few days in the hospital seems short, but if she's conscious and can take in nutrients orally (I don't know if her jaw is wired shut or what), home is sometimes the best place for people to heal. It can be such a burden on the family though, if she's in a wheelchair or on crutches.

Whuffles, lily.

Depending on her injuries, sending her home may speed her recovery, believe it or not. Sometimes the constant bed rest of a hospital stay atrophies the muscles, making it harder to resume normal activities down the road. If she can manage, she's probably better off being home with family.
