25 December 2008

Ok, what'd you get?
Well, I did better than last year. In 2007 my parents completely ignored my list and gave me two V-necked jumpers and a fleece from Marks and Spencers instead.

This year they completely ignored my list and got me one V-necked jumper and a fleece from Marks and Spencers.

I still don't want them, but at least it's less weight to lug home.

A complete DVD box set of M*A*S*H (and of course, plenty of time to watch it.)

Nothing. Told y'all - xmas is was canceled. We didn't put up a tree or lights or any decor. Oddly enough, we're still having a really good day.

Actually, between me being bleh, both of us with the flu and a shit ass metric tonne (did I say that right?) of snow we put it off til next week or so. We're gonna take $X each, go shopping together and spend it on whatever we want.

A salt pig! Yay! And Cookwise and Bakewise. And a food processor. And new spatulas. And some bourbon vanilla bean pods. And a very soft grey hat (and Mom let me take her mink hat with me!) and other things.

mr and the mister bought ourselves a blu-ray thingy a few weeks ago. So there was that. Also, an electric toothbrush.

I'll probably get more stuff once we see more family.

A Spider-Man pop-up book that is seven kinds of awesome.

A new mixing bowl, microplane grater, and mortar and pestle. I think the wife's sending me a message there.

Really awesome plastic popcorn boxes for movie night.

"Miller's Crossing" DVD to watch while I eat the popcorn on movie night.

More to come at the parents'.

Deer jerky, macadamia/white chocolate cookies, cheeses, more mixed nuts than I could eat in a month, Rocky Horror DVD, and a mandolin (cheap but playable).

We did not do gifts this year. Other than a pair of nice socks for each person.

I got 2 coffee makers, TWO. One is an espresso machine, and the other is a little 4 cup thing. So basically I have no reason to go to starbucks or any other coffee shop ever again.

Eyeshadow palette, blank notebook, delightfully morbid cookie cutters, and two gift cards for furnishing new apartment when I find one. And a cake, I guess.
posted by casarkos 25 December | 15:55
2 sets of pajamas, a t-shirt, expensive earrings and a necklace, gift cards to Best Buy, Macy's, and Sephora, smell good bath stuff, a giant chocolate penguin, and a rolling weekend duffle bag. My family is pretty suck assed on the gift-giving part because the majority of this stuff is things that I don't really use (and the PJs are the wrong size, like usual).

crazy thermal socks, long underwear, gloves.

I got a pretty Banana Republic necklace, a purple knit cap, some purple Ray Bans (classic!), a Dune Grass Yankee Candle, some jeweled hair pins, some new white socks, and cash monies.

2 terrific CD collections of classical guitar music, my latest interest. Cooking stuff - serrated knife, salad spinner, pepper mill. Warm orange fleece vest. Earrings. America Eats! book. Lots of warm fun times with family & sweetie. A great breakfast cooked by Mom. A walk on the beach. Time away from work...

Two cashmere sweaters, white button-up blouse, novel, calendar, Wii Fit.

My kids got of ton of cool stuff. Including a new 14-foot trampoline. We already have a trampoline. The safety netting is shot so my parents bought them another one. Cool!

Money from my folks, which will go to a pressure cooker I've had my eye on, and some Janet Evanovich books - Sue Grafton hasn't done a new book yet. :)
posted by lysdexic 25 December | 19:06
A computer! Which I still haven't unpacked from the box.
Money from my mom's boyfriend.
A gift certificate to Banana Republic from my mom. (I don't usually shop there, but I mentioned to my mother that they were having a sale. AFTER I had bought a hat, scarf and gloves from there Monday in a desperate attempt to keep from dying of hypothermia.)
A copy of Searching for Anne of Green Gables by Irene Gammel.

And I think there might even be more to come.

Alas -- and this makes me hopping mad -- my mother forbade me to give her or her boyfriend any gifts at all this year. And I listened to her. She said she wasn't giving me anything either. What she doesn't understand, I think, is that it would have made me feel good to give her a little trinket. Even if I am generally living on bread and water these days.

Oh, and my mom also bought me a carton of cigarettes. Which doesn't sound like a good gift, what with the carcinogens, but actually is much appreciated. It just sounds so ... dysfunctional, like I'm Bender from The Breakfast Club, you know?

Fifty dollar gift card from Barnes and Noble (my son)...electric blanket (my folks-that was asked for, and given to both me and hubs) plus other various and sundry items.

In a couple days I will be posting a pic of my weirdest gift. My daughter gave me a small Pink Flamingo kit. Four tiny plastic pink flamingoes, a plastic fence to stick into some florist's foam to make a lawn for them, plus a tiny book including flamingo trivia.

My other eclectic gift, and a personal favorite-hubby gave me a Kliban cat calendar. If you were around during the Seventies, you will understand how profound and charming a gift that was for me.

Other daughter, son in law and Grandbun are coming to town on Monday...I will have some time off then. Yay!

I... kind of didn't get anything. I slept on and off until 8:00pm, made dinner, and now I'm hanging out with a kitty. It's only slightly depressing.

loiseau: send me your address, and you will receive a gift in a few days. My email address is in my profile. Someone just sent me a gift out of nowhere so I am full of giving!

Oh, and I received a Sony ICF-M1000 table radio. Basically a Tivoli knockoff reduced to $50 on Ebay. Sounds great.

The usual - SFA. Apparently I'm almost impossible to buy gifts for because I don't want anything. People should just give up and save their money.

Although, I did get a little bag that was hand-sewn by my 10 year-old daughter and which contained a miniature Cherry Ripe. Cherry Ripes I can get anywhere, but she spent a whole day cutting and sewing to make this little bag and I was quite touched by that, so it was worth all the other presents put together.
posted by dg 25 December | 23:29
what is SFA, dg? I'm thinking... not Super Furry Animals? I'd like to see a picture of the hand sewn bag - that's so sweet and cute!!!

I'd also like to see a photo of stewriffic's quilt made from felted sweaters - that sounds all kinds of cool.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we needed to spend some money to keep it from being eaten by taxes, so we bought some write-offable stuff: my new Thinkpad (so very very yay!), plus extra ram for the Thinkpad, two monitors, a printer, a joystick, two new mice, and an external dvd drive. I think that's the haul.

SFA = Sweet Fanny Adams (or words to that effect)

I got, among other things, some new clothes, a bunch of the Toscanelli cigars I like, a bottle of my favourite whisky, a fancy bottle of Venezuelan rum, & some books.

My gift from my parents was for me to spend up to $200 on the shared credit card, and I got myself a paper shredder, a file box for my financial paperwork, a pair of boots that have waffle-tread on the bottom, and a step stool so that I can reach the upper cabinets in my new apartment, so far. My present from my sister is going to be the expanded (but not super-blingy) version of The Happiest Days of Our Lives by Wil Wheaton, which is going to ship in February.

Because I had to figure out exactly what my boss, roommate, and M.S. got me for Xmas so I could figure out how/where to pack them, I had to open those presents tonight rather than tomorrow morning. From my boss I got enough cash to technically buy a fold-out futon couch from IKEA, and a lovely soap dish with a very lovely lilac soap. I believe that I'm definitely going to be using it first thing when I get to my new place. From my roommate, I got an satin-lined Avon-brand coin purse that benefits the breast cancer foundation. M.S.'s gift was the best, though: a little stereo system that can play video from my iPod and has an alarm clock. Oh yes, I can has music in my new apartment now!

I don't think it is in your profile -- but I was just gonna email and apologize for my trolling! I did okay yesterday and I'm alright, really. I'm sorry for being mopey in a posi thread. I guess I was just letting off a little steam. The offer is really sweet, though, and on a side note, I totally jibe with your Mefi-related remark in your profile.
