I don't think I listen to anything from 2008. I have no idea what is going on when it comes to current music.
I do like that Katy Perry Hot n Cold song. Most of the lyrics are kind of dumb but it appeals to my younger self. It makes me shake my hips and swing my arms over my head, with intermittent snapping. haha, It's not a pretty picture, I'm sure.
I just listened to The Galway Girl. This version and the Steve Earle version.
Yesterday, my kid told me that his teacher has cats named Duke and Earl. Then I proceeded to sing the song, Duke of Earl. He asked me to please, please stop and did not believe it was a real song. So, I played it for him a few times. I sang some more with a fake microphone on the coffee table.
I'm currently working on my year end Top 20 (a very long and anal retentive 2 or 3 week process of relistening to everything and thinking wayyyy too much about it), but here are few singles that stand out off the top of my head...
Parts & Labor - Nowhere's Nigh - I only discovered this band a few weeks ago, but since then I've played this record a few dozen times (and picked up their earlier releases). To me this sounds like a cross between Stereolab (namely the keyboards) and the Wedding Present. It's a dissonant rock with a killer sense of melody.
The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let Me Go - Killer great no brainer dance pop. This is probably the song that popped into my head the most throughout the year.
Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes - Another dancey new wave pop song that kept popping into my head over the year. Maybe as I'm getting older I'm getting more into dance pop, because so far I've picked two dance pop songs - and only a few year years ago that never would have been a good thing for me.
Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa - I've been told that this is an over played internet phenom song, but I only discovered it a few months ago and really dig it. To m y ears it's like Paul Simon's Graceland for the young indie rock crowd.
As I found links on YouTube I suddenly realized that I don't really watch videos much anymore, because I hadn't seen any of these. And none of them really bowled me over. But I still stand by the songs.
I apparently played Journey's "Who's Crying Now" 22 times in 2008. It takes the title by a wide margin. Next up is Ladytron's "Black Plastic" with 11 plays.
It was mostly a music-less year, which has been horrible - except in the car, where I have Sirius. occhiblu tells me we can set the stereo up any time now.
Well, I wouldn't know a single from 2008 if I fell over it. My top 20 most-played tracks all come from Pink Floyd, Roger Waters (solo), Billy Joel, The Doors, Supertramp and David Bowie (although "Kiss Off" by Violent Femmes was #20), so I know nothing of your new-fangled music, because I'm happily stuck in the '70s.
this is what last.fm says I listened to a lot of-- it doesn't count multiple plays on my iPod so it may not be super accurate. I may make an opentape out of these, especially since I haven't put one up in an age.
