20 December 2008

A relative of mine who works for a car rental place usually drives one of his store's cars as a company car. Yesterday he found a large amount of crack cocaine in the car he was using. How can he safely get rid of it?
I would think either go to the cops or just pitch it (playing the odds that a craxck head or someone who knows what it is would find it).

Large amount? Like a brick-large? If it's really large, I would, even though TV and news has taught me to be very afraid of cops - actually turn it in. I wouldn't touch it though, I'd drive to the station, point it out and say here's the rental-lists by the way you guys figure it out - done my civic duty reporting this.

Then again, maybe I'd have to flee town after that. Big bad crack dealer ready to kick my ass soon. Hmmmmmm. Maybe just drop it into a bin? Then again, some homeless person might..ah wait, might sell it and get food for Xmas?

But yaknow, I'm an idiot, the other day I waved down traffic to collect papers that had been strewn all over the street because I noticed that one of them had a signature on it. Stopped and parked the stroller at once and collected everything I could get, turns out there was apartment lease contracts and al sorts of important stuff in there. Went to the cops and gave it to them without even reading it (duh! and I'm so curios!). What I thought might have happened was that someone had an accident as they walked to the copy-place, dropped their papers, and possible ambulance picked them up but not the papers. Nobody on the street even looked twice at these documents.

When I got off the phone w/ him (he didn't call about that, just mentioned it as a funny thing to have happen) he was leaning toward pitching it out somewhere not close to his home. (In a dumpster or something, not on the side of the road... heh)

on preview: NOT in the water, either. He already knew that.

yeah the tricky part is choice of dumpster. You don't want kids finding it yaknow? (formerly a dumpster hopping kid for fun and old comic books!)

I just mentioned this to Mrs Slack and she stressed being careful that he dosen't get busted dumping crack. I would think the less time he's in possession of it (and the less traveling with it) the better.

Does your relative know a lawyer he can call over the weekend?

Argh, I'm now hating pals situ. What if he skids with the car and dinks someone elses taillights while he is off on his crack-dumping-errand. No way in hell would cops beleive that he's off to throw that away.

Then again, they can only search his car if he agrees, right?

smoke it - it's the only way to be sure.

Speaking as a landlord who has turned in pot plants and crack pipes as well as uncounted empty tied-off baggies, just turn it in. Chances are the cops will be about as interested as he is, but they may want to have a look-see at the rental lists to see if there are any "hot" matches. Or they may want to fingerprint/DNA the sample to the extent possible, if it's really a "large amount" (by cop standards).

Call the cops straight away - it sounds like a plausible reason for the crack to be there, but the longer he delays reporting it, the less plausible his story becomes. Getting caught dumping it would make for a pretty sorry Christmas - even if the cops believe his story, he's committed a crime by disposing of evidence.

Otherwise, report it to his boss (if he has one) and don't touch the car again until the boss has dealt with it.

What dabitch said. Just turn it in. Give the cops everything they ask for. One thing drug dealers and drug addicts don't do is willingly give up large amounts of drugs - so on that behavior alone, he will probably not be suspect.

I think there are many more dangers in trying to secretly dispose of it. If it's caught and somehow traced - there's a security camera somewhere that makes out the vehicle's license plate, someone sees him, the cops have been told he's driving around with it - the consequences would be so much worse, and he'd be in the positiion of someone with a sketchy story trying to get rid of drugs.

Moral of the story:

If Woody had gone straight to the police...this would never have happened.

No, wait, I meant:

Honesty is the best policy.

Yeah, turn it in. Officially, through the company.

A friend's coworker got a package at work - that ended up being a LARGE amount of shrink-wrapped weed. Apparently someone stole a UPS label or something from a client and it ended up going to their office. They called the cops, the cops thought it was as amusing as they did, no big deal.

Turn it in!!!

This.

Or... hell crap, maybe not. What if it actually is somehow related to the boss? And what if the boss then calls the cops and tips them to check your relative's car? Outrageously horrible, but something someone very well might do if they were desperately afraid of getting in trouble themselves.

So, really a sucky situation, and while I would normally not involve police in pretty much anything, maybe it's best here. Call them first, so that, yeah, if he gets in an accident or something it's already established that he was bringing it to them, or it's possible they will tell him to stay put, they'll come to him (I would pretty much bet on this). Yuck, yuck, yuck. No good choices, really. Yuck.

Yeah, but I think the best bet in this case is to chose the path with the least likelihood of ending up someone's bitch after being unable to convince the cops you were just dumping drugs in the vacant lot because you didn't trust the cops to do the right thing.
