15 December 2008

Pitysville, USA. Population: me. [More:]
I lost my job today.

The entire game I was working on got dumped. The other two writers, the graphic designer and I, all on contract, got notice around 11:00 am. Meeting in 15 minutes? OK. Oh, who are those two dudes? OK. Got an hour to clean out our desks? OK.

None of us had so much as heard a whisper that this might be possible. Quebec is the only province which GAINED jobs last month. The "casual games" sector was hailed to be the Next Big Thing in the gaming industry. The company was boasting record profits just a couple of weeks ago, and we had two insanely decadent (almost hedonistic) company parties in the last four weeks. One, the holiday party, just on Saturday night. 2200 people; budgeted 12 drinks per person at the open bar. There was a hired contortionist. There was a CUPCAKE TABLE.

So...

Uh...

Yeah...
Hmm...

I don't really know what to do, say, think.
Wow, that really, really sucks. I think you are entirely justified in getting bowled over by this news! (((loiseau)))

Sorry :-( I'm pitying you, too, so you may want to update your census data.

Holy crap, loiseau, so sorry to hear that. Best frigging time of the year, too. Assholes. (Not you, your former employer)

That's awful loiseau. So sorry to hear that! Not only are they asswipes, but they're asswipes with bad timing. Big hugs for you if needed.

When I had lost my job, first thing I did was take a couple of days to decompress and take inventory. Then I hit the bricks and looked for work. I got temp work right away, and that helped me pay the bills, and I felt better about actually working. Plus it kept my personal inertia going.

We're here if you need us!

Yikes. That's awful news. I'm so sorry .. what a blow. I hope they're giving you some kind of severance pay. It's terrible and I'm really sorry this has happened to you. Makes me very sad and mad.

That sucks. It probably doesn't help to know that there are lots of folks in the same shape. Fun times.

Terrible for you and completely graceless on the part of the company. Contractors are people, too.

Sorry this had to happen to you.

Take a deep breath over the next day or two, get the resume up to date, and start looking. If Quebec is doing reasonably well, you're in the right place at least. Think positive; it will translate into a job. I have faith in you!

Loiseau! SMASH!

No one should ever have to reconcile a layoff with an image of a goddamned cupcake table.

Oh, (((loiseau))).

My partner has also been laid off - we returned from 2 weeks in the Caribbean to a voicemail message, but I'm really goddamn glad we went on holiday when we did because it might be a loooong while before our next one. Merry fucken Christmas!

Thanks, everyone.

I have slept most of the last 36 hours. The implications are just sinking in... need to call creditors, need to update CV, need to get up in the morning despite my body telling me that sleeping would be easier and I wouldn't have to think.
