15 December 2008

Can I ask a really silly favor? As you may have seen in a previous shouting thread, I have a website for my events. It's really important that it work properly before our next ad campaign begins on 12/31.

I just need people to take a look in their preferred browser and screen size, and let me know if it looks ok. [More:]

This is the one that is causing the most trouble. This is the main page for events.

Please let me know your system (PC or Mac), the browser you view in, the size of your screen, and if there are any problems with the header, sidebars, or layout. I'm not looking for color preferences and such, just things that make the page look broken.

I will give you cookies and internets!! Thanks!!1

(Also, this is totally sfw. We throw an all-ages animation festival.)
*and I crawl under my desk for forgetting the "MORE" tag...

ug..sorry

Both look great:

PC, WinXP, Firefox 3.0.4, 1024x768

The first one looks fine on this Mac in both FF and Safari. I would, however, move the text block for "SubVersion Anime Fest Ticket" away from the graphic a bit. They abut too closely.

The second link looks fine too, though the black text in your banner is a bit difficult to read. Designy-type people will have good advice on how to make it stand out more.

Looks thoroughly unbroken in Firefox 3(.0.5, if you must) and Safari on my Mac, at all window sizes from stretched across both monitors down to, oh, say, 51x80 pixels.

The first one looks odd to me in FF 3.04 on XP. Unless you intended the banner to go all across the screen. Screen width 1650.

Looks fine in Opera on XP. As pups said the text on the banner kind of gets lost.

Looks great to me! Windows XP, FF 2.0.0.18 (yeah I know, it's on my list)

It does the same thing for me in IE7. Maybe you intended it this way?

Looks fine in FF 2.0.0.18 on XPpro. (I have FF3 at home and don't specially like it.)

Looks fine to me on FF 3.0.4 on Vista running at 1280x800

darkforest -That is funky.

Sounds like functionally, it's working, but we've still got some aesthetic fail.

That store header is giving me major grief. The silver bar is part of the template. I can kill it easily enough by swapping the grey image for a white one, but I can't find the code to align the logo png.

In the event page, we'll swap the header for a more readable one. We are redesigning it anyway, to include characters from our actual schedule.

Easy fix for the text. I can change the width of the center column.

I noticed IE still hates png. Need a jpg instead.

Thanks for helping, everybody!

Also, double internets for the more tag! Thanks!

You might be better off with GIF.

Why am I seeing it different than everyone else???

Here's the screenshots for me (PC, Portable Firefox 2.0.0.17, XP, 1280x1040)

First page: (The overlapping squares kinda bug me.) and here's the second page, which looks fine to me.

K, will do gif.

df - The logo is currently aligned on the far left of the screen, and the banner is across the whole of the screen. Is the body not center aligned for you? It should be...

What I'm seeing looks a lot like DarkForest's screen cap (FF 3.04 on win xp), but I'm not sure what the problem is? The header looks like it's in a weird place, but I thought it was intentional.

Somewhat non-gross IE png hack: http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/

Not quite sure what you mean. The central rectangle is centered, but the image is not centered within the banner. I'm not enough of a html hacker to quickly read the source to find out why.

They both look great on a Voyager, the Verizon version of an iPhone. You may want to find someone with iPhone thouugh since that is what the gadget freaks are more likely to use.

Friend says iPhone looks great. I'll have to test it on my Blackberry when I get home.

Thanks df - yes that's the issue I have. By the code, the logo is top aligned on the left side of the page inside that bar. You're seeing what I see. I want the logo aligned on the left of the center box. That's the code I can't find. It's like swimming through mud.

At least now the header isn't bumping the info off the screen. That was what I was looking for in this post- an actual break. I freaked out a bit at our planning meeting when we brought up the page on the projector and couldn't see any of the ticket information.

At 1024x768, both sites look okay in Firefox 3.0.4 (WinXPPPro), tabbed.

ZenCart, eh? I've been using that for a theatre box office. For free (per host), it's tolerable, but I have complaints.
posted by grabbingsand 15 December | 16:10
Yeah, Dreamhost has it as a free one click store software. One click is a little deceptive, btw...

I have too many complaints to list, but you get what you pay for, ya know? The worst thing is creating any sort of customization. It took forever to figure out how to place close ups of clothing in the store's listings. Then there was the resounding CRASH. Thank god most people paid in person. I only lost about 8 accounts. Getting ZenCart to do anything is a continual work-around. Never straight forward, even when padding a picture.

I've made a few adjustments to the store. It looks cleaner now. Still working on the logo.

Like, dude!

(Oh, PS. It's a nitpick, but I would change the page title on that Zen Cart page.)

If I can find it...gah!!!!

Also, the entire frickin internet to you!

Massive extra credit...
// added defines for header alt and text
define('HEADER_ALT_TEXT', 'Dreamland Japan');
define('HEADER_SALES_TEXT', ' ');
define('HEADER_LOGO_WIDTH', '192px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_HEIGHT', '64px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_IMAGE', 'logo.png');

How do I pad the logo?

K, update -
The page title is correct now, and so the bookmark.

I've removed the bounding boxes (well, just made them match the background) and got rid of the annoying header bar. Working now on aligning the header.

For those of you who are interested, it was in the css stylesheet. :P
