Original Versions Of Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers. [More:]

Mars Bonfire - Born To Be Wild. Mars Bonfire was the stage name of Dennis Edmonton, whose later joined a band called the Sparrows, which morphed into Steppenwolf. Dennis' brother Jerry stayed on as drummer after Dennis left, and took the song with him. Steppenwolf's version is far superior (one critic calls it 'the first Classic Rock song' )but this has a nice sinuous, more psychedelic feel to it.

Arrows - I Love Rock And Roll. The Arrows were a pop-rock band from England, who recorded this tune in 1975. They also had their own TV show, which was stumbled upon by a young Joan Jett when she was touring England. She liked what she heard and turned this fine stomper into something of a higher order entirely.

Jerry Jeff Walker - Mr. Bojangles. Jerry Jeff was a country-rock singer/songwriter (although he briefly was in the lighter-than-air psyche band Circus Maximus, who had a minor hit with the utterly doofy 'The Wind') from upstate New York, who wrote a song about a jailhouse encounter with an alcoholic tap-dancer that was covered by just about every one else on earth, most notably the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who recorded the definitive version.

and as a bonus, a not-exactly-a-cover-but close enough:

Freddie Scott - You Got What I Need. I got this late sixties nugget on a downloading spree from a soul collection. When I clicked on play and heard the opening, I immediately burst into a smile, as will any hip-hop fan or child of the late-eighties and early-nineties. Serendiptious discoveries like that are one of the reasons I collect music.

Enjoy y'all.
...and one I forgot.

Ray Barretto - Deeper Shade Of Soul. Dutch outfit Urban Dance Squad did a rao/rock version of this in 1991. It's not bad at all, but I'm mainly grateful for it, because it led me to this by master conguero Ray Barretto.

That Freddie Scott song is fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

I actually went a long time not knowing that Everything Counts was a cover.

To be fair, Wolfdog, 99% of the human race has gone their entire lives without knowing it existed at all. The first three songs I listed (and the mutation of the fourth one) have been heard by just about everyone on the planet, which made their origins more surprising.

"Deeper Shade of Soul," W00t! My senior year of college, a buddy of mine and I had a radio show that was a mix of mod, acid jazz, r&b, soul, etc., and playing Ray Barretto/Urban Dance Squad back-to-back was a mainstay.

Aw, I'm listening to it now.... SO GOOD. It's been ages since I've heard this! Thanks, Jon.

To be fair, it's just something I felt like mentioning, regardless of whether it had the stunning educational value of your original post. You might think of it as a complementary perspective (hey, here's a song you'd think everybody would realize was a cover, and yet...) if you like.

Ooh, with Deeper Shade of Soul I just heard what sounded like a riff from Knock on Wood. I love the original of that song as well, by Eddie Floyd.

You'll love Big Bird by Eddie Floyd even better, it's an amazing song.

Truth be told, the most surprising ones of this buch were the Freddie Scott song (for obvious reasons) and the Mars Bonfire track. I'd known about The Arrows and Jerry Jeff Walker songs for decades, although I didn't get to hear them till the 1990's. The origins of "Born To Be Wild" I only learned about a few weeks ago. That was a definite "Whaaa?" moment.

I am a huge music fan, and thus was extremely embarrassed when I learned that "Hard to Handle" by The Black Crowes was a cover of an Otis Redding tune.
