What's your favorite Michael Jackson song? Inspired by this AskMe.
Billie Jean. It's the funnest to dance to.

Yes. funnest.

Do Jackson Five songs count? If so, then "I Want You Back." If not, then begrudgingly 'Beat It," due to Eddie Van Halen's presence.

'Human Nature' is pretty awesome. I think Mike's got a lot of great songs.

(Slash plays on 'Black or White,' for what that's worth. Even simulcast and with a Simpsons intro, though, 'Black or White' isn't my favorite.)

That walrus video did a lot to elevate Smooth Criminal in my esteem.

Billie Jean, no question.

Ben! There's just something about a love song to a rat that gets me right there. Anyway, I doubt I could name another of his songs other than Beat It and I only know that because of Van Halen.

The Jackson Five actually did a (not bad) cover of Jackson Browne's "Doctor My Eyes." My theory is that a producer was reading a record guide and notice that they were on the same page and figured "What the hell? Why not?"

"Rock With You" from the Off the Wall album. I like that whole album because he was just a has-been kid star when that came out and he was still trying to make good music instead of trying to feed his own ego by seeing how far over the top he could go. (Thriller was an okay album too, but after that he was far down the road to freakdom.)
posted by Doohickie 13 December | 21:47
Yeah, but, especially in retrospect, you could see the freakdom from the getgo. Mike's one of those artists where you have to separate the art from the person.

Billie Jean. No contest.

Probably "Beat It." I like "Human Nature" a lot too. And "Thriller."

occhiblu: Eddie Van Halen played on "Beat It?"

ikkyu2: Yes, he had the guitar solo.

occhiblu: I didn't know that.

ikkyu2: Most people don't know that.

occhiblu: Johnmc knew that.

ikkyu2: Yes, I would expect him to.

(My answer would be "Thriller.")

occhiblu hears the opening parts of "Beat It" from ikkyu2's computer.

occhiblu: What's that... oh, yes. Did you see the Metachat thread?

ikkyu2: No.

occhiblu: What's your favorite Michael Jackson song?

ikkyu2: "Beat It," because of Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo.

occhiblu: That's exactly what jonmc said.

ikkyu2: I would expect him to. He has good taste in music.

I just watched the Thriller video. I was too young to appreciate its complete and total awesomeness when it came out, though I loved it then too. Awesome!
posted by occhiblu 14 December | 01:17
When it came out, many people (including myself) saw the "complete and total awesomeness" as over-hype.

Although Vincent Price doing the voiceover during the video is, in fact, complete and total awesomeness.

#thing B-billie Jean.

What's even better is that the credits call it a "Rap," in quotes, capitalized: "Rap" by Vincent Price.

Billie Jean, then Thriller. Or vice versa.
