12 December 2008

I want a new way to keep warm. [More:]Grumble. I'm cold.

I want the sleepingbag-esque stadium blanket my family had in the 80s.

It was navy blue with a maize block M, maize fuzzy lining, open at the bottom (for walking), open at the top with a split (for wrapping around shoulders/head), and fluffy poly filling.

That was the best blanket ever. Proto-slanket.

(go blue!)
I bookmarked this the other day.

Right now I'm wearing: long sleeve shirt, t-shirt over it, down vest over that, bamboo yoga pants, knee socks, down slippers(!), and a wool hat. I also baked bread earlier to warm the house and, well, have bread. I think the down slippers might be the new greatest tool in my arsenal against cold.

There's something like this that I've seen recently on late-night TV commercials. Basically a blanket with sleeves.**

**Optional crumb tray not included.

Oooh. That is a wonderful thing, birdie.

I'm wearing jeans, socks, shearling slippers, t-shirt, cashmere sweater, bandanna and over that a mohair hat. I had the dog on my feet, but then I got up. And remembered I have a heating pad. GO HEATING PAD!

I had the dog on my feet, but then I got up...

Well, there's your problem, right there! If you've got a dog on your feet, just don't ever get up.

Stewriffic... aren't you in the Carolinas?!

I'm sitting here in my work clothes (thankfully I get to go to work in jeans) but also wrapped in a really soft light purple robe I got for Christmas last year. This end of the house is always chillier. Brrr.

I think mudpuppie is talking about the Snuggie.

Every time the Snuggie commercial comes on my youngest begs for me to call the number and order one. The kid has the Snuggie on the brain. Tonight, out of the blue, he said, "We should get a Snuggie because it's going to be cold on Christmas Day."

There is something strangely compelling about the snuggie commercial. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it hits the right tone. Makes you go WANT, but then you think about it, and you really don't. Or maybe you do. I dunno.

I love that the Snuggie is basically just a backwards robe.

To me it looks like monks attending family functions, which is weird enough to make me stop and go, "Wait a minute..."

That Snuggie commercial is hilarious (wow, blankets are so goshdarn hard to use!) but every time I see it I just think "cold".

It's the same principle at work as what makes mittens so much warmer than gloves -- covering yourself with a blanket traps your body heat inside. Separating your arms keeps them from enjoying your body heat.

Besides, the sleeves look too short to me -- I would want the option of pulling them in (but actually can picture myself stuffing them into the bodice to get warm.)

But, if you did want to have one, I can tell you that at fabric-manufacturer retail outlets here in Montreal (which are plentiful) you can buy real polar fleece for $5.95/metre, which means you could make one of these in an hour or so out of warmer stuff for like $12 max.

(Oh, and I mean $5.95/metre from a 54"-width bolt. Value!)

Those people "wearing" the Snuggie look like members of a cult.

I'm wearing a long sleeved t-shirt, sweatpants and slide on slippers (toes are covered but they're open in the back). My feet are kinda cold but the rest of me is warm. If I put socks on, I'll get overheated.

Stewriffic: you might wanna change to sweatpants or something similar. Jeans aren't built to keep you warm.

Hot water bottle. Not really a bottle, but a rubber bag. Fill with hot, hot water, put on feet. The dog will likely pile on. Replace hot water as needed. and wear a hat?
