10 December 2008

three point update: 1. I am now an EMPLOYED BUNNY. I work at a local, very established, florist shop, behind the counter mostly (altho they do let me "process flowers" i.e., unpack em, clip em and get 'em ready for the floral designers)....I have been working there for just over a week and already I think I will be giving jonmc a run for his money with the stories. [More:]Let's just say that the stereotype of guys in the doghouse sending bouquets is alive and well in various and sundry and hilarious ways.....I also am charged with watering and tending and selling what seems to be about a million poinsettias, some of which are bigger than I am (in mass, not height. But still.)

2. I has a cold. Do. Not. Want.

3. If anyone gives or sends me a poinsettia this year I might have to kill them. See #1.....

Dear Santa, can I haz reminder of existence of more inside tag?

Bunnyfire! Good to see you. I found a great picture of a bunny eating cilantro the other day (and lovin' it) but didn't post it because I thought you were gone. It's like the old thing, if a tree falls in the forest and no-one hears it ... if I post a Bunny! Cilantro! OMG! and bunnyfire doesn't see it, did the bunny really eat it?

Oh, you scamp you, torturing poor innocent woodland creatures with that nasty soapytasting herbage....blechhh!

Working with flowers or green plants is my dream job for when I retire/age-out from my current role in life. So, I'm ^green w/ envy^

1. Not into the xmas thing at all this year - at least it will be over pretty soon.
2. Work has been cram busy of late.
3. Happy to have yesterday's dental work out of the way and hope my mouth feels better soon. But, yippee for mashed potatoes with no (OK, just a little) guilt!

Yay for job! My homie worked in a flower shop doing the deliveries for a while. I went with her one day when I was visiting and immediately knew about all the drama in her community.

1. I turned in my part of my performance appraisal today. That's the hard part. The next challenge is going to be the conference, in which I ask for more money.

2. I submitted the last piece of my libsci application today. One of my recommenders has already submitted her letter. My boss is one of my other recommenders and I have to email the third to tell her to check her spam folder for the link.

3. Tonight involves going to see some shitty townhouse and condo with my father and some realtor, even though I already told him I WANT NO PART OF THIS but nooooooooooo, he doesn't listen when I talk. But it balances out by the fact that I might go take a very long weekend over New Years and go visit my homie and get very, very drunk.

You know who else works in a flower shop? iconomy, and I'm getting cranky at her for being away on her latest secret mission for so long. Can you please send her a message via the secret florist network to get back here right now?

Oh, forgot:

2. Also over the Christmas thing (even more than usual), but looking forward to going out with workmates on Friday night and getting drunk/making total fool of self.

c. Somewhat concerned about the announcement yesterday that the government I work for plans to cut 200,000 jobs next year.

I'm jealous! I can't find any kind of job in Portland!

1) I hit a curb, going sideways, at about 20 miles an hour today. The wheels were pointing *in* when I got out to look at them. I took it to a garage, they're estimating the whole thing will cost $1500 to fix which includes 600 for a power-steering pump that was leaking really bad, and 90 bucks for a fuel filter (90k mile checkup, lol)

2) I've rediscovered the joys of walking, I need to wreck my car more often.

3) AI test is in, like, 3 hours. Bayesian logic makes little sense, as does Fuzzy Logic, Neural networks make my head hurt.

I should mention that the roads were very very icy, and that I was not, in fact, pretending to be a rally driver.

1. Got off work early today, and SHOULD have spent the afternoon wrapping gifts. Instead, I procrastinated and took a nap.

2. Going to see BitterOldPunk in Birmingham this weekend! Yay! (But elizard will have already returned to Canada for the holidays... boo.)

3. Am seriously hoping we don't get ice tomorrow night if the rain continues while the temps drop, as they're predicted to do.

Congrats on the job, bunnyfire!

1. I didn't ride my bike to work today (for the first time since Thanksgiving) because I had a meeting away from my office.

2. The meeting was canceled so I didn't have to drive anywhere anyway.

So, you've been feeding cilantro to the lolcats, I take it????

1. Welcome back bunnyfire. I've been looking for your return.

2. MeCha still blocked at work. Where things continue to disintegrate. Hoping I can re-engage, and that my boss gets transferred.

3. Baby tr33 is eating real food now - rice cereal (so-so, I'll eat it I guess), oatmail (me likey!), sweet potatoes (ok, I resisted at first, but they are pretty good), and carrots (OMG!!! NOM NOM NOM NOM OMG!!! NOM NOM NOM!!)

1. Pain in my legs from the (stupid/well-intentioned) decision to walk downtown on Sunday is worse today.

2. Dr. appointment on the other side of Portland tomorrow. The doctor I love is a frick'n day trip away.

3. Might be switching to a work from home and/or part time schedule soon to accommodate my inability to wake up not nauseated. Good for me, good for the ailing construction industry. btw- I'm not preggers, so don't imply. :)

also KAWAIIIIII on the little tr33-bunny liking carrots.

1) Hey, bunnyfire! Congrats on the job.

2) Royally pissed at some coworkers causing trouble by not reporting trouble when it could have been handled quietly. Now we have a bigger hole to fill, and it has landmines.

3) ZOMG so embarassed. Ex forgot to pick up kidlets so I get a phone call from Younger Boy: "mama, can you pick me up?" Right in the middle of that call Ex calls and said "Ack! Can you get YB, while I get Older Boy?!"

4) Cursing the fact that it's Wednesday and I can't drink.

1. Was looking forward to sitting up & catching up with the friend I'm staying with, but he's feeling ugh and has gone to bed. Now I'm full of post-travel energy with nothing to do.

2. Looking forward to a week of seeing good friends. Woo!

3. The less said about xmas the better. Divorces in the family suck. Hard.

Yay jobs!

I worked in a florist's shop for a summer. I was immediately pegged as "too incompetent to handle anything besides watering the plants outside," and was put to work doing heavy lifting, replacing light bulbs, and cleaning the basement.

I did hear stories, though. One time a guy walked in and asked how much it would cost to buy every rose in the store. When someone pointed out that it was going to be REALLY expensive, he said: "Yeah, I screwed up. REALLY BIG." I don't even know how much they charged him, the owner of the place was making a killing.
posted by dismas 11 December | 11:54
Yeah, I'd say men screwing up and then trying to fix it with flowers is a great big proportion of business...and you should read the cards they have us type out to go with the blooms. Oh, the humanity.
