So... any other Quebeckers around? [More:]
For the second time in 15 years I didn't vote in an election. I found out too late that registration at the polling station wasn't allowed. I have done that in the past, so I was counting on doing so this time, but found out today that I was denied.

To be honest, I had been thinking of spoiling my ballot anyway. I really *really* like 99% of Québec Solidaire's platform: "Nous sommes écologistes - nous sommes de gauche - nous sommes démocrates - nous sommes féministes - nous sommes altermondialistes - nous sommes d'un Québec pluriel --"

(* for non-Frenchies, "we are environmentalists - we are leftists - we are democrats - we are feminists - we are [this is hard to translate but it's sort of like a very nuanced anti-globalization-as-we-know-it] - we are of a diverse Quebec --"

But it was the final plank I couldn't jibe with: "nous sommes d'un Québec souverain et solidaire."

(* "we are of a sovereign and solidary Quebec.")

Françoise David was even running in my riding (Gouin, around Little Italy in Montreal). I really respect her personally. But in the end I knew I couldn't vote for a sovereigntist party. It's totes a deal-breaker for me.

So, while I admit to feeling relief that the Libs have won a majority, and that Pauline Marois isn't the premier (something about her gives me the heebie-jeebies + always has) the whole thing isn't exactly a joy. I liked Charest when he saved Quebec from itself (so to speak) but I'm kinda grossed out by him now. Lesser of two evils...
Oh, and I'm not surprised by the shitty voter turnout -- last I heard it was 51%, which from what I've read is about 25% lower than usual.

Wonder how many people got tripped up by the (new?) no-reg-at-polling-station rule?

Um, well, if it helps, I'm a couple of hours from Quebec (I think; I've never been there), and get a couple of Quebec tv stations on my cable. I watched a little of the coverage last night, but since I didn't previously know anything about it (it was like, hey, look! Quebec's having some elections!) and my french is poor, I didn't get very far.

If you guys would only secede from Canada, it would shorten the drive from Halifax to Toronto.

Poor alone loisieu. As an anglo northern Ontarian...I can't really relate to Quebec politics. AND, the current state of our federal politics has me sooooo bummed about with regard to politics. Booooo low voter turnout gets us shitty governments it seems.

I'm an anglo Quebecker and I can't relate to Quebec politics either.

It's been said that the current state of affairs federally probably contributed to the Liberal win, because people were freaked about the idea of change -- electing a PQ government would bring sovereignty back from its coma, and that's really bad for the economy.

Hey, Pignons! Cheer up, lol, I jest. You could be living in Ontario.

altermondialistes: reminds me of a line from Le Diner de Con[Eng], 'la classe mondiale'[Fr]- lol.

I enjoy the humour of the Quebecoise, the politics I'm not too familiar with, but I can understand they don't want to get steamrolled by English Canada and separation is rather drastic, but as a Province, my guess it's an attempt to keep the culture alive.
