Fish emblem tape/glue removal filter. I got a new (to me) car today and it had a chrome fish thing on it I didn't want. →[More:]
so I got it off with a hair dryer to heat the glue and loosen it up, but there's still some thick foam tape & glue on it. I went to the car part place and asked for something to safely remove the remainder of the gunk, and they said use this stuff.

I'm scared to! It's a dark green Mini Cooper and I don't want to f**k it up.

Any one have any experience with this? Any suggestions?

Have you checked on any car bodywork forums? They're usually good places to find recommendations or endorsements of products people have used. I expect there's some kind of Mini Cooper enthusiasts' website which has a forum.

goo gone?

I've used that to remove plenty of stickers / tape residue / etc... off of bike frames, which are variously clearcoated, enamelled and/or carbon fibre resin. Haven't damaged any finishes with it yet.

Quite truthfully I always rub this kind of tape off with fingertips and possibly a pencil eraser. Easy peasy.

I've had good luck with Naphtha. It's quite a benign solvent, but seems to work well with glue type stuff. You can find it at your local hardware/home despot type place. As with everything, test in an inconspicuous spot, like your neighbor's car.

Thirding the Goo Gone. It'll take the wax off your car, if any, so the spot may look a little dull unless you wax it back to a shine.

A dark green Mini Cooper sounds really pretty!

As with everything, test in an inconspicuous spot, like your neighbor's car.

Thanks guys! We took my old car to carmax tonight, who bought it from me. While we were waiting for them to process paperwork, etc, I charmed the non-busy garage guys into getting the goop off for me. I am, however, noting Goo Gone for future goo removal. :)

They used some secret carmax stuff - blue liquid something and some elbow grease. :) I'm gonna wax it b/c you can see it if you're at the right angle.

Mineral spirits. It's what detailing shops use to remove road tar from car bodies. You will need to re-wax.
