Possibly petty and minor gripe about flickr comments [More:]I appreciate comments on pics very much - but I find those "..... Award" or "Seen in Whatever Pool" with some often tacky gif to be distasteful.

They seem so intrusive into the comment thread. And are an even bigger pain with the recent activity action on the front page.

I don't mind so much if someone shows a small size comparison pic though of the same scene or subject as mine.

A friend of mine deletes all those types of comments form her stream.

I wish there was an option to not allow pictures in comment streams.

Do you delete or ignore comments with those "badges"? Or are you one of those keen on commenting with them?
I hate those badges too. I don't post many pictures on flickr so I rarely get them. But I quickly delete them anyways.

I don't use Flickr but when I browse the site I find those "I'm an administrator of ________ group and I'd really like to add your picture to our group" comments super-obnoxious. I wish people would use the messaging system for solicitations, or better yet, don't do it at all!

Heh! I posted about this very subject once... they drive me crazy. I delete them now if the pic is obnoxious.

You'll find that most of them come from a group you have submitted the pics to... drop out of that group and it goes away.

on preview: loiseau, those messages are built into the system (there's a button that lets you post them with a click if you are an admin for a group) but I wish people would delete the message once they've added the pic, or not. I started doing that and it keeps your comments looking better.

Ooooo sorry BP - I did search!

Sorry? This isn't that other place! :D You wanna talk about a subject, you talk about it! And this is you talking about it!

(Double links might get you a pic of a bunny on a hillside, but that's just for links)

I really, really hate those little award comments too. This is not Geocities c.1994, thankyouverymuch.

Flickr is a weird site, because it can be used for very different things. Some of us (like me) just use it as a place to do photo hosting; somewhere we can put our photos so we can send links to show to friends or keep copies for ourselves. And then there's people who are using it for community, looking at other people's photos, giving them awards, favoriting them for their own private purposes. Those people in the latter group kinda freak me out. I don't want weirdos looking at my photos, favoring pictures of my sister to add to their large collection of pictures of redheaded women, or whatever. And I know that I could just make my photos private, but I still want the people I want to have access to be able to see them whenever.

I too hate those stupid YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE STUPIDLY NAMED AWARD comments.
Then again, I never receive them. So.
:P

yea what CitrusFreak12 said, also TPS. But then I'm not a "pool slut" (nor is anyone else here, I think) so I rarely get them. When I do, I delete them.

The thing that annoys me the most tho is on some really good photos where I would actually like to (god forbid) read the comment thread for intelligent content on technique, or perhaps add my own question(s), except that then you have to wade through 200 spammy award or OMGLOLSOAWESOME!!!111 idiotic comments... I usually just hit back and don't bother at that point.

but then I'm probably just an old grump so feel free to ignore me. AND GET OFF MY LAWN!

I hate those awards too.

My greatest Flickr moment was when I was Ron Jeremy's latest contact.
posted by essexjan 24 November | 12:30
Yes, those awards are dumb. For the most part, anytime someone solicits a photo of mine for inclusion in some group, I don't bother. There are a few groups I'll send my photos too, once in a while, but that's about it.

My weirdest flickr moment of late was discovering that a picture of Sophie has become popular in Brazil. It's got about 4500 views in the last month or so...I even got a couple new contacts out of it. I don't know these people, so I've not reciprocated, but on some level, I find it a little weird.

I saw one the other day... "I'm the administrator of the BLUE CLOTHES group and would like to add your picture."
It was a small close-up of a part of a medieval painting.

but seriously... blue clothes? this is a special interest? do they have fights over if indigo counts?
posted by kellydamnit 24 November | 13:32
That really is QUITE the special interest.

richat - you can make the photos of the girls private or viewable only to friends.
posted by deborah 24 November | 14:03
I hate them almost entirely. It's only good if someone makes a thoughtful comment about the photo. Otherwise I just delete them now. I've noticed the award thingie is a phase some people go through after they first join up, and are figuring out how it all works. Oh, and the "I'm and administrator" thing is lame too unless, again, there's a thoughtful comment. Even worse is if the person does it, and doesn't even notice that the photo is already in the pool...

As far as contacts go, I'll add people whose photographs I like, and for the most part they reciprocate. A couple of my contacts actually have become good online friends as well. Which reminds me, I need to get out and take some photos...

hi deborah!

Yeah, I make some stuff private. Anything that shows some skin for example. But, for the most part, I don't make them private, cos sometimes I am happy to share photos with non-flickerzens and others. This one of Sophie that is now my most viewed photo is just a self portrait she took of herself, it's a head shot really. It's just weird that so many referrers are in Brazil - Orkut.br specifically. I tried to do a wee bit of sleuthing, but the best I could tell was that it might have come from a group that likes nice photos of kids. It seemed like moms, not creepy at all!

This is the photo, in case anyone's curious!
