Id Engager Of Montreal get exquisite-corpse and pansexual via animation
I love the new album, thought it took me several listens to get into it... it's kind of an extension of the last album, and a lot of it has a 70s retro-soul vibe... ridiculous, yes, for a bunch of white folks from Athens GA, but they know how silly it is and that makes it fun.
Also, can I say "Yay Surrrealism!" ? Because there don't seem to be many folks in pop culture embracing it like of Montreal do. Seeing them in concert in the 90s was like watching your nieces and nephews re-enact a Peter Gabriel-era Genesis show in their family room... it was fucking bizarre and also wonderful.
I liked the Hissing Fauna album quite a bit, but I'm kind of sad they're moving so completely away from their more fey and whimsical roots. I still like the early psychedlic poppy stuff the best. (I just got Cherry Peel last week, and it's pretty much all I've been listening to since.)
I love The Sunlandic Twins, Satanic Panic in the Attic, and Aldhils Arboretum.
Hissing Fauna was a very mixed bag -- some good songs, some not so good songs, and nothing as good as most of the songs on The Sunlandic Twins.
I've heard most of the new album and don't plan on buying it, listening to it again, or keeping up with their future output. They seem to have given up the business of writing good songs in order to focus overwhelmingly on their live show. More power to them if that's what they want to emphasize. But they've lost me.
