12 November 2008

So, down at the Famous Bookstore, [More:] we have a little whiteboard where we post the schedule of who's 'Greeting' at the front of the store. It lists the time, the persons name, and what department they usually work in. yesterday ay 2:30 they scheduled a kid from the Art Department named Jack with the last initial 'F.' So the board read "2:30pm JACK F ART," which unleashed everybody's Inner Beavis for a few hours.

Today, at the bottom of load of books, I found a stack of about 15 'autograph' photos of the 1984 Detroit Tigers, some of whicch I kept and the rest I gave to fellow baseball fan co-workers. Jack Morris had quite a 'stache.

Going through another load of books, I found a ton of volumes of sheet music, including 'Stairway To Heaven,' 10 volumes of Jon Denver and about 6 of Gordon Lightfoot. Homeboy's all about the edgy, man.

And Oh, yeah, David Bowie was shopping in the store today. I didn't talk to him but i saw him shopping (his identity verified by fellow workers who've dealt with him before). he wore a black ballcap and jacket and looked just like he does in photos, which is to say, remarkably good for a man of his age and history.
Oh, wow, seriously? Bowie? That is awesome.

I love the famous bookstore, jon, and I've never even been there.

That is awesome, and more than that, surreal.

Bowie's one of the few "celebrities" who remain larger than life to me. I think I'd have freaked out just a little bit.

If I ever wind up in said town that this bookstore is in (my mind wants to say San Francisco, but that might just be miscellany), I'll totes have to come by. I'm eager to see if it's the same in my head as it is in reality.

sperose - it's in NYC. If you do show up while jon is working and introduce yourself, he'll probably post about it on Metachat :) It'll be an awesome self-referential thing.

I knew a guy who looks exactly like Bowie circa today, except this guy is only 28 or 29. It's a little creepy.

Nah Manhattan, sperose. First known to me for selling books by the yard.

I hear ya, BP. Bowie = me a squealing fangirl.

If I could figure out Manhattan without getting lost in the Bronx for 3 hours (no map and my roommate who "totes knew where she was going" was no help), I would totes roll by next time I visit.

BoPo, he's probably the only celeb I've encountered who looks exactly the same in person as in photos. It's uncanny.

Also, I once met a countergirl at a sub shop who had four different Bowie personas (Ziggy, the Thin White Duke, etc) tattooed on he forearm. I imagine Bowie'd either be honored or scared shitless.

I completely agree, he has a mystique that doesn't seem to fade. If he really was an alien who fell to earth, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I should add, I'm a fan of Bowie, not a fanboy. I don't like everything he does, but hwen he hits on all 8 cylinders, he's astounding and he casts an undeniably long shadow over rok and roll.

I assume that's true of you too, jonmc.

BOWIE!! OMG. I would have lost my damn mind. As a young girl, my bedroom was covered in pictures of Bowie and Sting. I have since--wisely--changed my opinion on Sting, but BOWIE...holy macaroni, he only gets better with age. Even handsomer. Even cooler. And every time I listen to Panic in Detroit it rocks EVEN HARDER. How is that possible? BOWIE! OMG.

Yes, Bowie's wonderful, but what of poor Jack Fart? Is he nipping at your nose? Huh Huh-Huh.

All I know about David Bowie I learned from the movie "The Labyrinth."

And I passed up the chance to see Bowie at a 1500 seat auditorium, back in the day.
(My other "miss" was Stephan Grapelli, and now, Spring Awakening in a church in Chelsea before it went to Broadway.)

I saw Bowie once. I was working the front desk at a hotel he stayed at, and I saw him in the lobby. My knees went weak.

what an awesome job. it's like dumpster diving and yard sale-ing, only the dumpsters and sales come to you and you don't have to hunt for the goodies.

Mrs Slack and I met Bowie and got to talk to him for a minute. At one point I looked over at Mrs Slack and she looked like she was going to black out. Afterwards she said she couldn't believe how incredibly handsome he was. I said that he looks great for his age and she said he looks great for ANY age. We were also quite taken aback at how damn charming he was.

Well, that's the upside. You also have to deal with the psychotic street flotsam and all the garden variety assholes that infest any retail establishment, and since this is NYC, muliply that exponentially.
