I need a multi-tool for doing basic tooly stuff like opening boxes, screwing/unscrewing, yanking staples out or pinching things closed.
I'm not ape about a sheath for it, since I rarely wear a belt, but it would be really nice to have a clip thingy so I could clip it on my waistband or lanyard without having to dig it out of my pocket all the time.
initapplette, do you find yourself with the full size wishing for the micro and vice versa? Does one live in your car and one in the house? If you had to carry one daily, which one would you prefer?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you mostly want something with a knife blade (size not really important), pliers and a couple screwdrivers? And also some kind of clip, whether it's a belt clip or a keyring loop or whatever? Do you spend lots of time around bikes or electrical stuff or anything specific like that? Do you usually carry a bag? What kind of clothes do you usually wear? How big's your keyring? Are corkscrews and/or bottle openers important?
The Leatherman Juice series is a nice Swiss-Army-Knife kind of mid-size, and you can attach 'em to a keyring or drop 'em in a pocket pretty easily. Alternately, the Leatherman Skeletool has a better knife blade, and is well-suited to clipping to the front pocket of my work pants.
The things I use most are the pliers, knife, and screwdriver. If the scissors on the Swiss knife were any use I'd use them more.
I've only occasionally used the bottle opener.
I mostly wear pants with pockets, and something like these big multitools will fit ok in jeans, but not my dress pants. I usually just have a small pocket knife in my dress pants.
I have a one shoulder bag that's my purse, so the fake leatherman I have resides there now.
Leatherman - no real contest. I used to always have a micro attached to my keys, but I've lost one to TSA and one to security at an Obama rally (in Texas even! (I was there for work))
I've got a Topeak Alien as well, and it rules, but it stays on my bicycle. I find I rarely need a chain breaker off bicycle :)
I have a Leatherman Squirt and a Spyderco mumblemumblecan'trememberthename. The Squirt is great for tightening random screws, especially those in computers. I bought it over a Swiss Army Knife (I used to have one but lost it) because of the pliers. Pliers are definitely nice. I haven't used the blade on it lately because...
Last year my boyfriend brought me over to the dark side of Spyderco. I checked their Web site for multitools. Perhaps you would like to consider this?
It has an adjustable crescent wrench, two-setting slip joint plier, four screwdriver bits, file, and 2 1/2" blade. And a clip! A fancier version is supposed to be available soon.
Both. I have a Leatherman Juice S2, which is a useful size for pocket carry, and I like the orange-anodized aluminum sides - conspicuity makes it a bit harder to misplace. I also have a full-size Gerber, which is too big to lug around and which lives in the earthquake/zombie kit. It does have more rounded edges on the handles, so it's somewhat easier to really get a gorilla grip on. Ultimately, I guess I prefer the Leatherman for jobs smaller than fending off zombies.
