Opus has his last panel. [More:]

I cried, sorry.
And, still, the link to the final message won't load.
Maybe it's just swamped.

So did I.

Why is this sad? Is he dead rather than sleeping? Is this some kind of commentary on animal shelters "putting animals to sleep"?

It's not sad. . but if you are a parent, chances are that you have read "goodnight moon" at bedtime more often than you can count.

For me, it just hooked into all of the "stuff" about wanting safety and happiness for your kid, peace in the world, and that golden time when your kid is finally asleep and you can "let down" a bit.

So it's bittersweet, now that those days are over, and a perfect ending. I forgive Breathed now for Outland, and for the pretty much worthless reincarnation of Opus.

Plus, it's a wonderful book.

You're right, danf. I used to have "Goodnight Moon" memorized. If I was started off, I could probably recite the whole thing from memory, and my youngest will be 12. My newspaper didn't carry "Opus", they stopped with "Bloom County", and I had no idea it was around except when I visited distant relatives. I smiled when I saw Opus snuggled in the bed, for exactly what you said, danf. He's safe, warm, and snug. Perfect.
