Mullacc's comment made me think the column was by Krugman, who is good, so I clicked over and saw "Friedman" and clicked Close Close Close Close Close Close as fast and as many times as I possibly could.

I hate Friedman's writing. Bleh. Just seeing his name gives me the heebie-jeebies.

it's pure Friedman: a couple of generalizations, a shoutout to baseless stuff he feels in his "gut" (the way he felt Iraq was a great idea), a senseless anecdote (in this case, a racist one to boot) that he heard from some asshole in some think tank somewhere. he isn't even cheaply counterintuitive the way Slate tries to be, because he's too stupid even for that.
