Hmm Can you guys help me ponder through an idea for a contest to raise cash for charity? I need friendly troubleshooters/opinions.→[More:]

I'm trying to raise a ton of cash for a charity by a certain deadline. And I'm doing sort of a poor job...or at least it feels that way sometimes. So, I was thinking of hosting a contest on my blog (DC-area themed). The idea would be that you pay a small sum ($1, $2 $5?) and you take a guess at what the final electoral vote split will be in the presidential election.

Then, at the end I'll cough up some sort of prize (I have no clue what, ideas welcome).

Does this seem like a good idea? Potential trouble? Anyone have better contest ideas for a DC/Maryland theme contest that wouldn't exclude people living outside the area? The election is coming up quickly, so I'm not sure if that gives me enough time to raise any funds.

Write a post about the charity and a cool prize (iPod, camera, knife set, big gift certificate, etc.) The rules for your readers: make a comment on the post and donate at least (set dollar amount). You will pick one comment at random to win cool prize on such and such a date. And everybody is a winner because they donated to great casuse.

I read a couple craft blogs and cooking blogs. Whenever they do a giveaway (book, Kitchen Aid Mixer, knives, yarn, etc.) people come out of the woodwork to comment. Maybe they'd be willing to donate 5 bucks and comment for a chance to win cool prize.

Yeah. It iseasy. All they have to do to enter is make a comment and donate small amount. Make sure to post cool pic of your prize and talk it up (I know you will).

If you decide to go that route, here is an example of an expired giveaway.

Awesome. I went ahead and set up this contest, but if anyone has more ideas I'd love to hear them. I have time to run a few of these before I hit the deadline.
