15 October 2008

After a quiet few months, the police are back upstairs. [More:]
He works nights, doing some driving job or other in his Merc. He's not a chauffeur or a taxi driver, it's what Americans would call a town car service, I think. The type of driver who collects businessmen from the airport, that sort of thing. Although what he is doing all night I don't know. I suspect he's driving escort girls to their appointments. He usually leaves at about 9.30 each night, and comes home any time between 4am and 6am.

Anyway a couple of times a week he brings back some skanky crack whore. They're always in their late teens/early 20s, with that skinny desperate air of the junkie prostitute.

He left at about 6.30 this morning with the girl he'd brought back in the early hours, and about half an hour ago, I noticed a police car outside, talking to someone in the passenger seat of his car. It was the girl. It would appear they'd driven away and then for some reason she refused to get out of his car so he came back here with her and one of them called the police. She was talking to the police for a while, getting quite agitated, and then one of the officers came to Vic's door. How convenient that I was in that bathroom and could hear everything!

It turns out that he'd picked her up on his way home from work, as he does, and her story was that he'd taken £20 off her for drugs. I don't know what his story was but he was saying "normally with these things it's all up front but then this one turned and I wanted out of it".

Now I think what the girl was saying was true because I've heard this before from the women he's picked up, as have neighbours. He dumps them outside with no money to get home. There've been many arguments I've overheard where women are claiming he's stolen money from them.

The policeman said "well, as you've got a nice Mercedes and live in a nice house, we'll give you the benefit of the doubt" and they drove her off somewhere.

He was quite upfront with the police that picking up prostitutes is a regular thing for him.

It looks as if he's now trying to hide his car in the garage but I think it's too big to fit, they're small garages. I can only just fit my Ford Escort in mine. Huh. He managed it.

He is scum.
i had a neighbor go screamy on me.It had been weeks and the other day i'd had enough; The next day he was gone. Apparently taken away, possibly by ambulance, i'm glad i didn't have to be involved.

i wish we could get rid of him, but i also know how horrible that sounds, being able to throw people around and out.
Too, bad. We gotta get rid of him. Does he own it, too?
Will chronic bad smells make him leave?

Can't ho's have little signs like hobos did, so they can scratch his car (or his FACE) with a "don't go with him, he'll steal your money" sign?

i think you'd have to brand him and spread the tale.
But is he closer to the worst or best pimps out there?

God I hate bad neighbours. Sorry you've got him, Jan.

I'm no fan of prostitution, but hell, don't they have social networks or something? Isn't there a way they can communicate with one another that this guy is more than ordinary bad news? Maybe they're not a very organized group, more the opportunistic variety than agency workers.

It's pretty disgusting that the police gave him a pass because of the nice car and nice house. HelLO! And come on - after the number of times this guy's gotten involved in these scenarios, don't the police know this hasn't been uncommon? Do they not keep track of people who have a record of trouble at their address?

I had a creepy, crazy neighbor before I moved. It's so stressful. Sorry you have to live with that, EJ.

"well, as you've got a nice Mercedes and live in a nice house, we'll give you the benefit of the doubt"

Did they actually say that? Or was that in essence what they did? I can see the latter, yes, but actually out and out saying the former? Quite odd.

No, those were his actual words, CF.

This is the British police we're talking about here, remember, where the canteen culture of racism, homophobia and sexism still reigns.

Miko, we live right on the border of two police districts. The police who get called out here are from Essex Police. 100 yards down the road, and it's the Metropolitan Police. I don't think there's any liaison nor any database of 'known addresses' that they'd be aware of between the two police forces.

The US police say stuff like that, too, commenting on how certain things don't happen in "nice" houses, blah blah blah.
There's an IQ cap, you know.

I'm no fan of prostitution, but hell, don't they have social networks or something?

They do here, IF you have internet access and know where to look. For the most part the prostitutes on those forums seem to be straight forward business women with their own homes and so on. More stable and less strung out than the street walkers, probably?

And the johns know about those websites, too. I'm guessing if you're an asshole you're stuck with the street walkers.

I do internet dating and before I respond to anyone I google their email and any other info I have on them. It's funny how many guys don't use separate email addresses because they *DO* show up on the forums as "stay away! this guy will steal your money!" or "refuses to pay for services!" or whatever.

On the other hand, our financial office has had a few applicants who are stupid enough to use the same email for everything. When you get an application for "carameldelight" you pretty much don't even have to google to figure out they have, shall we say, another source of income. I refuse to hire them on the grounds of idiocy and nevermind any other reason.

This scuzzer neighbour of mine targets street whores because he knows he can abuse them and get away with it. I hope one day he picks the girl with the nasty, nasty pimp who'll make sure he collects.

So he's definitely not a pimp then? i thought last time he was.
And prostitution's legal now? Or like pot legal?
posted by ethylene 15 October | 11:53
*shudder* This guy totally gives me the creeps.

And is it time to talk about the pros (ha!) and cons of legal prostitution?
posted by TrishaLynn 15 October | 12:07
I've never been sure what he does, eth, except that it's illegal and it involves him picking up prostitutes, who sometimes stay at his flat for several days at a time.

Prostitution in the UK is not illegal. By that I mean the acts of buying or selling sexual services. What IS illegal is: soliciting for prostitution (i.e. standing on a street corner picking up johns); and operating a brothel. So a woman can work as a prostitute if she places an advert which people answer, and provided she works alone, but she can't work in an apartment with another prostitute, because that constitutes a brothel or live with a man whilst working as a prostitute, because then he is 'living off immoral earnings'.

All this does is serve to drive it underground, and I don't know that there is any kind of network or organisation of prostitutes in the UK. I know that the young women that I and neighbours have helped out when they've been chucked out with no money have all been young, vulnerable and desperate.

So pimps are illegal? What about rentboys?
He's obviously picking the weak ones, and his ranging area just can't be that big, other girls must have seen him and know. We've been hearing about it for years and he's been up to it much longer. The turn over cannot be that quick, can it?
It's such a mess.
posted by ethylene 15 October | 12:39
A rentboy, if working alone and not soliciting on the street, is legal.
