It would be sad to mess with Nerdhaven. Little geeklings need something to look forward to and i completely deleted what i just wrote because the people from those other school like a good vendetta nothing.
I worked at MIT for six years. It was the best job I've ever had in terms of atmosphere. My current workplace is much more concerned with image, and I miss MIT mightily.
I used to take a yoga class after work, and the closest restroom for changing was behind a door that was locked after business hours. So quite often, I would walk downstairs and down a long hallway to change wearing a grungy T-shirt, athletic sweat-material shorts and black high heels. No one ever looked at me twice.
Hey, speaking as someone who went to MIT: some of the geekiest people I knew were also the ones involved in the arts or whatnot. (And, uh, that first calendar they mention? Raised money to help perpetuate the kind of culture where students build 3 story wooden roller coasters or put cop cars on top of buildings for fun.) And I treasure my collection of horrendously bad/great geek-joke shirts.
The Glob's overstating things more than a little. Proud owners of Abelson's "Nerd Pride" pocket protectors aren't yet an endangered species...
