I had a bus race... [More:]

via txt msg with another carfree colleague last night... (we usually ride same route, colleague missed our usual bus, tried another route that went to same place). it was hilarious, and weirdly awesome. sample txt:

fuck driver got stuck @ [notorious intersection] this will take years

it occurred to me: holy CRAP that was nerdy. Still awesome.

anyone else done something really frickin' nerdy lately?
I should note for sake of clarity that the bus Colleague took was a semi-express and according to schedules they both should have arrived in downtown Denver at roughly the same time... however in the real world we both know RTD schedules are at best a very rough guideline.

I've heard people on my bus talking about this. Calling each other back and forth about their locations. Then freaking out when we overtake the earlier bus.

The key to winning bus races is to have a completely insane driver.

while this is granted, here in Denver, it's also crucial to have a driver who knows the goddamn route. With the current driver shortage, this is not always a given. Last week I actually had to coach a substitute driver (for practically an entire ~30 mile regional route, mind you) who'd never driven in Boulder before in her life

At least you have halfway decent public transport.

:-p

it is decent, I will grant you that. the regional busses are postitively swanky.

that said, it is friggin EXPENSIVE:

local, 1-way: 1.75 (rising to $2 on 1/1/09)
regional, 1-way 4.00 (going up to $4.50)
monthly regional pass: $144 going up to $160

that said if I were a student or permanent employee of this place, I'd get a free annual pass.

blah.
