Love. [More:]

The other night, I broke open a fortune cookie and found this rather cryptic, single-word message: Love.

What could it mean? Is it a command: Go forth and love. Is it a hug from afar, metaphysical arms wrapped around me and squeezing, "Love"? A reminder to hold tight? A wish?

I tucked it in my wallet. On the back, the Chinese word for "Sugar."
If I could manifest a pure selfless love, I'd probably be a lot better off. huh?

I once received a fortune and pasted it into the front of one of my innumerable journals. "Consolidate your interest while the lights are active."

I think it has something to do with the hard drive activity light on my PC.

Love is the force that has to be conjectured in order to explain why I still own an animal that has thrown up in my bed.

all of the above, plus it's a good reminder. Somewhat analogous to the "be mindful" fortune I taped to the stem of one of my bikes years ago. This xkcd comic nicely sums up where I'm going with this concept.

In the mouseover text, the cartoonist makes the(to me) somewhat profound observation: "You can look at practically any part of anything manmade around you and think 'Some engineer was frustrated while designing this.' It's a little human connection."

I guess what I'm saying is that while love as an absolute is extremely cool, I think I'd settle for the potential of increased respect for each other that is implied by us as a society being a little more mindful of each other.

Wow. I've been reading xkcd for years and had no idea that there were extra mouseover messages. Thanks! You've just increased the love in the world.

DarkForest, now you're going to have to start from the beginning and re-read every single comic to read the mouseovers.

lol, you're welcome DF. Took me awhile to figure that one out for myself. The comic definitely takes on a whole new (third?) dimension with the mouseovers, imo. geeky little inside joke on the authour's part, perhaps.

Out with friends one night, I was complaining about how I always get the stupidest fortunes. They laughed at me, but I told them it was an unfailing truth.

We cracked open our fortune cookies. Mine said: "You will receive a fortune (cookie)."

They laughed no more.

At one point, I was in the throes of romantic drama, which was shared among my circle of acquaintances. Eating out Chinese with a friend, and of course regaling her with the latest update of the saga, I got the fortune: "You're romantic life is interesting only to you."

Thanks for the comments, folks. My next one will probably say "Soap" or "Fart."

The thought of Fart Soap makes me giggle.
