AskMecha: Naming help. I need a name that conveys stability and security... [More:]It's a work thing, so it can't be too silly. But my co-workers keep coming with names derived from things like ice-breaking ships and Civil War-era forts. One I did like was Greenbrier (based on the hotel with the nuclear bunker underneath).

Adjectives that describe what we're naming:
Secured, stable, neutral, uncorrelated, consistent, reliable, contrarian...

Greek gods/words are mostly out because those have been pretty thoroughly picked over in my industry.

Any help?

Switzerland? Until your last criterion I was going to go with "the Rock" but that one may have been taken.

Greenbrier needs to be explained (to 99%) and by itself I don't think it brings up those associations.

Hmm. John Henry?

Oh, that may be a feature, not a bug. My boss thinks that explaining the name is a clever way to segue into his talking points when meeting with investors. At no point will it be marketed for mass consumption.

The first bank to fail last year in the UK (and which is now nationalised) is called Northern Rock, aka The Rock, FWIW...

All I came up with were Palisade and Helix, but one's a fort and the other's greek.

I don't know about contrarian, but 'Death' pretty much fits the rest of those.

Windbreak and Palisade are good. Though there's already a big fund called Palisade.

This is not as easy as it may first appear.

Clearly, you should name it 'box.' Or maybe 'vault' or 'garrison' or something.

Ooh, how about 'bivouac'? I think I had a G.I. Joe by that name.

nickyskye: yeah, I know that firm and that was my initial objection to it. Anyway, the hotel with the bunker to which "Greenbrier" refers is The Greenbrier with an e.

I do like Sentinel though despite my aversion to military words. Ainsworth sounds good too (though I'm not sure how well the translation fits--sure sounds purdy though).

I have a probably personal attachment to

Aztalan

and

Cahokia

both prehistoric Amerind city-structures in the Midwest. They're not connected with modern tribes in any academically rigorous way. The only problem with the first is it would be confused with Aztlan, which is something entirely different.

Or maybe a ruin is the wrong way to go entirely.
