I saw Billy Joel once, someone gave me tickets for my 18th birthday (another someone gave me tickets to Tori Amos, so it was a great piano birthday). He had just broken up with Christie Brinkley, and said "this is what I think about marriage, you know what I'm talking about" and played ACDC's "Highway to Hell" (him on 2nd guitar, had a roadie as Angus). I liked him a little bit less after that.
If I had a little more money, I'd pay to go. It's a fundraiser, after all - and I'd pay that much just to see Bruce (not that big a Billy fan, but he'll sure energize the tri-state base...it's quite a pairing).
I think regular Bruce tickets were about $125 last fall when we saw them. With a ridiculously expensive (but awesomely cool and well-loved) baseball T thrown in, and some $8 beers and dinner beforehand and gas to get to the show and back, I think we were into it for $200 each. And that wasn't a fundraiser - well, not any more than Bruce's usual shows are, since he is a big donor.
Bruce fans will pay it - they won't bat an eye. Routinely, on backstreets, I see people talking about how they scored tickets to sold-out shows for $300, $400. There are plenty of people who can and will afford it. And a fair number who can't, but will anyway.
As I often say, Bruce has to be just about the only artist who I can pay $125 to see - that's a buttload of money for me - and still walk away saying "That was totally worth it."
