28 September 2008

I just lost all of my photos. [More:]

I was editing some photos on a friend's mac, and it completely froze up. Had to give it a hard shutdown.

As a result, it somehow corrupted my entire backup folder of photos since 2006. Upon connecting the external to my PC, it booted up, and deleted the corrupt folders (they were, apparently, completely unreadable).

Serves me right for not ever backing them up onto DVD.

I kind of a mess right now.
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that, CF.

Sadly, you now no longer exist.

Jeezus, dude, that's awful. I'd be a wreck.

I am so buying blank DVDs tomorrow.

OMG, that really is one of my worst nightmares. I am so, so, so sorry to hear about this.

I'm sorry. My photos are about the most important thing I have on my computer. Maybe a professional data recovery service could help?

Everyone should get at least an external hard drive for backing up the most important stuff. I use microsoft's synctoy on the PC (though I actually kind of hate it) for backing up stuff as it gets added to my photo archive. I find DVDs kind of a pain since I seem to have a hard time keeping them organized.

That's a cosmic bummer. You have all my sympathy. Backup backup backup etc. etc. etc. Multiple formats: external hard drive, DVDr, USB flash memory sticks, etc. BACKUP!!

Drat. My sympathies. Lost all my stuff on a virus messed up computer a bunch of times. It sucks.

Citrusfreak, I am so sorry. This sucks. Your photos were so wonderful. You'll take more wonderful photos. I am so sorry.

When I lose things, I find they're often in the last place you look.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Thanks all. Bleh.
I still have my Flickr. I keep telling myself that. Though a lot of them are not the original resolutions, and as far as I know there's no easy way to download them all to your computer en masse.

At the moment, I'm in talks with a friend and fellow MeFite who owns a local computer repair place. He's got data recovery software. I don't want to get my hopes up, though. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Ouch! I had a friend who loved (original) Napster so much and had an encyclopedic knowledge of rarities from the 1950s and 1960s so he spent about two years diligently seeking out everything he could remember. And then his drive died on him.

He didn't have it in him to start over.

It's possible you could recover them. Try testdisk, which I found via We used it to recover some data from a partition that was hosed.
