Pet peeve #3.1415926535 People who write in / underline / highlight library books. Fortunately[More:] you rarely see any writing/underlining/highlighting past the 10th page or so. Apparently, all the this-is-so-important-I-need-to-underline-it-and-highlight-it-or-else-I'll-forget-it passages are at the beginning of books.
Either that or they have short attention spans. Or just aren't bright enough to read past the introductory chapters.
I don't mind, actually. Well, I guess it depends on the intelligence level of whomever wrote in the book. In college, my STS professor had a terrible habit of writing in library books, but his margin notes were always so engaging and thought-provoking that it was hard to find fault with them!

I love it. An attempt to make paper books interactive, fun to see evidence of readers before me.

Little pencil check mark in the margin works for me. Well, that and a bright sticky thingy to mark the page.

I can barely stand to write in my own books, so would never deface a library book.
