7000 dead nutria wash ashore in Mississippi after Hurricane Gustav [More:] the nutria rat

This is freaky, even by Mississippi standards.
awww. That's so sad. And how strange. Wonder why that happened.

Is Mississippi known for strange things?

I ate some nutria once at a nutria cook off in the french quarter. It was very gamey.

Nutria have nipples on their backs. That's freaky.

Yuck. It's weird that it is someone's job to go look for dead nutria in the grass.

Looking up the weirdness of nutria's nipples on their backs (say wha?), came across this article,
Nutria, A Rat-like Pest Ravaging Gulf Coast Wetlands. It seems locals have been trying to get rid of these critters.

And a 10 pound rat. whoa. That's a lot of rodent. But 7000 of them dead. Dang, must be stinky.

Reading up on nutria. Incredible, they can weigh up to about 37 lbs.

They like to eat the roots of the marsh grass, guess they must have become all tangled/drowned in the hurricane.

ewww, "nutria itch"

Once in Old Delhi, friends an I went in the evening to the Tibetan refugee settlement to buy rice wine, chang. The settlement is on the Jamuna River. Under the street lamp I saw what I thought was a baby pig. But then in hopped away like a kangaroo. It was a huge river rat. Nightmare material.
