squirrels and snakes Related to mudpuppie's snake experience[More:] I found this interesting article on the coexistence of snakes and squirrels.

For instance, it turns out adult squirrels are immune to rattlesnake venom, though juvenile ones aren't.

And that squirrels wave their tails to decoy snakes away from nests, but not by visual means- by thermal! The squirrel tails heat up when they're being waved. The hotter the tail, the more likely the SQUIRREL will attack, thinks the snake...

Neat stuff!
I know Aaron. We used to teach a class together here in Davis. And I have also had (most likely) the same rattle snake (the one used in the study) in the class we taught. What a small world.

Fascinating. There are loads of squirrels here but no rattlers. Tempted to get one now, just to see ...
