Does the new McCain ad imply that Obama might be the Anti-Christ?
Fred Clark of slacktivist explains why he thinks it does.
I think McCain overestimates how much people know about biblical prophecy and/or get subtlety. Naive viewers might think this ad is pro-Barack. And why spend your money putting the other guy on TV?

Isn't having the anti-christ as president a good thing. You know, for the rapture.

As far as I'm concerned, the rapture can't happen quickly enough. Traffic's going to get so much better.

You'd do it, too, if your guy looked like this. But seriously, I think the ad is a web-only thing, done on the cheap.

And I don't think it's biblical knowledge the ad is appealing to, so much as specific knowledge of the Left Behind books and movies, and a general familiarity with the ideas of Hal Lindsey, Jack and Rexella Van Impe, and a slew of other prominent premillennial dispensationalists. Whisper campaigns never deal in facts, only prejudices and vague innuendo.

I think that this is one of those dog whistle things only meant to heard by a certain audience. He's trying to convince the crazy fundies that he's one of them without making it too obvious.

Yeah, I saw it on TV (being discussed, not airing, though I had the sound off) and just from the text on the screen, I thought it was aimed at the "Left Behind" crowd.

Actually I personally thought it was poking fun at the "Barack is practically the Messiah" crowd.

I doubt many americans have the attention span to get through that whole thing and catch the punchline. I'm with TPS in that overall, it will be seen as pro-Obama.

I remember when I used to respect John McCain. Been almost a decade now.

They might not know a thing about actual Biblical prophecy, but those books are surprisingly popular.
