OK. You're envied.

Yeah, I grudgingly envy you too.

I read a couple of reviews of Lou's pig candy awhile back, so have been itching to go ever since. The fellow who's done some translating for the book I'm working on is in town from Germany, and a bit of a foodie to boot, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

The Asian supermarkets around DC have sweet, fruit-flavored pork jerky. I had some recently, and it was yummy:
Another standout is the "hot fruit" flavor beef jerky. Unlike American beef jerky, it is not overwhelmingly salty, chewy, or dry. These thick slices of beef have been cooked in a sticky, fruit and chili-based sauce. The result is jerky that is still moist, succulent, and pleasantly toothsome. It's kind of like eating Asian-style barbecue ribs, except with less mess and no bones. The jerky alone is worth the trip to Rockville.

You know, F. Scott Fitzgerald's buried there.

Hey dano, you ever go to Roy's Place? I know it's Gaithersburg, but that ain't far.

I went for my birthday when I moved back here because I had fond memories of it from when I was a kid. I was kinda disappointed...I guess I've become more snobby as an adult. It seemed so dingy, which is nice for a bar but not for a sandwich place.

I'd gladly go again, though, if you'd be my date.

I'd be honored to walk into a place like that with you, dano. Maybe next time I'm in Columbia visiting my folks, I'll try to arrange a DC/MD/VA meetup. Though that part of Gaithersburg (the part that starts with a "G," that is) is a pain to get into and out of.

I loved it as a kid, too, but they had one in Columbia then that was a in a bigger space, with nicer decor (more odalisques, WWI recruitment posters, and stuffed mounted mooseheads with lingerie draped in the antlers), and a real sense of havoc.

I've been going there with my brother and a few old friends of ours around Christmas every year, and it's always pretty nostalgic, but yeah, quiet, and without all the cacophony one tends to notice the skidmarks.

In the "bacon candy" department, here's where "Queer Eye" has made my life better:

1) Stick an almond into a pitted date.
2) Pipe goat cheese into the rest of the cavity.
3) Wrap half a slice of bacon around it, secure with a toothpick.
4) Place seam side-down on a rimmed baking sheet.
5) Repeat a bunch of times.
6) Cook in a hot oven (~450F) until the bacon is cooked.
7) Serve them to someone you want to have sex with.
8) Automatically have sex. After the dates are gone.

OMG, middleclasstool...that sounds INSANELY good. I have to try that sometime!

Another good cured-pork-leading-to-sex trick:

1) wrap asparagus spears in prosciutto (blanch asparagus first, if spears are very large)
2) place under broiler till proscuitto is crispy
3) serve
4) have sex

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cured meats mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

PORK SEX CURE

1) Call Fortune Cookie
2) Place an order for pickup: Boneless spareribs, fried rice, coke, hot sauce.
3) Pick up order. Go home.
4) Eat, drink Coke, fall asleep while masturbating.

Maybe I need a TV.

It looks easy to make at home too, from that recipe that the author included.

Thanks for posting this! Have fun!

OH MY GOD, pig candy ROOLZ. It was so good we ordered three servings. It was insanely delicious: smoky, sweet, sticky, and just a tad spicy all at once. Seriously, seriously great -- I'm going to try to make it this weekend. I don't think even chocolate has made me as happy as pig candy.

I had salmon candy in Vancouver. Same principle?
