Only in Glasgow. "... A judge has told a Glasgow pensioner that stopping him going to the pub was a "more meaningful" sentence than a prison term for killing his wife..."
"He was always willing to plead guilty to culpable homicide, but this was flatly rejected by the Crown and that is why a trial was necessary."

What? Why?

That article made it seem like he was only banned from that one bar in particular. Shouldn't he be banned from ALL bars?

Dementia at 74?

I thought dementia was something that hit you in, like, your eighties.

Why does the line that the pensioner will be "tagged" bring up a mental picture of huge yellow tag hanging from one ear?

Jason's_planet, you can get dementia at earlier ages, too, it's just not as common.

jason's, sorry to say, but my dad is 71 and is in early stages of dementia. This story really reminded me of him, as we only recently got him off alcohol. His brother had similar problems (dementia + alcohol). It's like a frappucino of two ingredients that rob you of your judgement.

Sadly, I really can see how this is a punishment that will sink in with him.

cmonkey, he was basically ready to plea bargain, but the Crown was not obligated to accept his plea of a lesser charge. (Culpable homicide is essentially the same as manslaughter.)
