Why oh why did anyone think adding urine to beer was a good idea? That is an example of too many beers!

The catalog of the foibles of the human condition, indeed. I think half of these words are the made up words people submit to the Atlantic Monthly Word Fugitives section.

Some quotes from the OED.

"Your nose by its complexion does betray our frequent drinking country ale with lant in't."

"Twice a-week I had to collect stale lant (urine) from a number of places where it was preserved for me."

"I have drunke double-lanted ale and single-lanted, ..."

"Dead drunk with double lanted ale."

"To Leint ale, to put urine into it to make it strong."

Oh, and for completeness, lant on wikipedia.

It may surprise few that I once considered doing something similar. I am an inveterate dictionary-browser, regardless, but I balked at actually reading the durned thing cover to cover, as it lacked a certain je ne sais quoi narrative interest.

I mostly grew out of this phase.

The bit about glove amused me. I very often encounter common words that just have a strangeness about them, at least in that moment. Something like looking at a place you've driven up to and trying to figure out how you (or the English language) got there.

That's the worst one. No, THAT's the worst one ... || I gave myself a headache yelling this morning.
