The evolution of buying advance movie tickets.... I just bought ours for Dark Knight for next Sunday![More:]
I remember the novelty, just a few years ago, of buying tickets early in the day for an evening's show. Then, for really popular movies, I started getting them a day or two in advance. This is the first time, however, I've bought tickets for a movie a week in advance. (Maybe I'm just spoiled by the whole Arclight experience, though -- reserved [and comfy!] seating, quiet audiences, good [and cheap] parking, and a bar in the lobby. Five years ago, if you would have told me I'd be delighted to pay $14 a ticket to see a movie, I would have laughed. Now I think it's worth every penny.)

Anyway, the boy and I are goofily excited. Hope the movie's as good as everyone seems to be anticipating.
I bought tickets from Fandango to see Iron Man. We still had to take the tickets we printed out at home to the box office. We went early so we wouldn't have to wait in line, but what is the point of buying them at home if you still have to wait in line at the box office? I guess in case the show is sold out, you're guaranteed a seat. It would be nice to go right to the person that tears the tickets.

That movie theater is awesome, scody. We have some real dumpy dumps around here and not a theater bar to be found.

I cannot wait to see Dark Knight! It is supposed to be so great. Can't wait. We rented Batman Begins again the other night, just to get into the mood.

Tonight I think we're going to go see Wanted. Sister just offered to babysit. We saw Get Smart last week. It was entertaining enough.

I still hate buying concert tickets too far in advnace, I'm still not up to buying movie tickets any earlier than same day. Of course, I live in the suburbs and there's no shortage of theaters, so I have many same day options as long as I don't need to to see a blockbuster on opening weekend (which I don't). I'm not proud of it, but I've become a DVD and the couch kind of movie guy, even though I'm definitely missing something by not seeing it on the big screen where the action takes up my entire field of vision.

So the staff at Arclight will throw out loud offenders? I made the mistake of seeing a late aftenoon screening of Walk Hard at the Grove (after not being able to get into the Dali--it's coming to NY though, yay!)and being subjected to a pack of thugs who wouldn't shut up; I kept quiet. Also, I saw Happy Feet and Sweeney Todd at the dome after the conversion and was a bit disappointed that I had to pay the entire $14 without getting the whole experience.

I have the discount coupons from AAA, which means I have to wait ten days to use them at the regular chains--and it's gotten so that the only mainstream films I'm willing to see at night are chick flicks and literary adaptations.

Slack: I hear ya on the general reluctance to buy in advance. It's my dedication to "The Arclight Experience" (tm) that's warped me. And yeah, most movies can wait well past opening weekend as far as I'm concerned (er, except for "Sex in the City"... I KNOW! I'm not proud of it.)

Brujita: allegedly they will indeed throw out loudmouths, but I've never seen it happen -- mainly because with one exception (a bored nine-year-old and his evidently hard-of-hearing guardian, who yakked all the way through "The Bourne Supremacy"), I've never seen a movie there in which everyone wasn't ridiculously well-behaved.

The Arclight is only a few blocks from my house, but even aside from the convenience factor, I wouldn't see a (mainstream) movie anywhere else in L.A. I love the fact that you can pick your precise seats, and the food selection is considerable (even if I do generally sneak in my own apples and a Camelbak). But I love the huge and cushy seats, the generally respectful audiences, and - most of all - the special screenings (e.g., the entirety of the AFI 100. Gonna see The Muppet Movie this week, aw yeah!).

Our local nice* theatre has about a dozen computer kiosks that take debit and credit cards. We never stand in line.

*We drive about 45 minutes to this one although our town has a couple theatres. It has cushy seats, stadium seating, awesome popcorn, etc. It also has the only IMAX screen in the area.
