The best way to give notice? [More:]I tried negotiating to work from home so I can watch our baby, now that my wife will be going back to work. That didn't work though so I have to quit.

While flipping people off and storming out would be immensely enjoyable, the people here have been pretty nice to me and it's been a decent job.

So considering that I'm planning for my last day to be in the middle of August, is there an ideal way for me to get the quitting over with.

Can I get by with just emailing a "Hey, thanks for everything, but my last day is X"? Can I say it in person or do I have to write up a letter?

Is a Friday a good day to do it? A Monday?

Should I do it quick like a bandaid or let it linger?
Write it in a note and deliver it personally. I'm not sure what you do but don't be surprised if they ask you to leave that day with 2 weeks pay.

It's a small company and (as far as I know) I'm the only one here who knows how to do my job.

One complication (from my perspective) is that I have nearly 2 weeks of available vacation time and really wish I could take advantage of at least some of it.

Write a brief formal letter indicating the date of your last day of work and deliver it, in person, two weeks before your last day. Then you can sit down with your boss and talk about any or all of the Fuck You things you wanted to write in your letter. But usually your letter of resignation will go into your HR file, so it's not the place for a huge rant.

Can you take some of that vacation before your last day? Schedule 2 weeks of vacation and then when you get back give your 2-week notice? I did that once, and it actually worked out really well.

If you can't take that vacation time beofre giving notice, what does the employee handbook say about unused personal leave? Many companies will reimburse you at least 75% of whatever you haven't used.

I did it on a Friday, which I think was good. At least for me, because I tend to get freaked out and nervous about it. It made Friday a bit weird, but everyone was kind of in a laidback mood so that helped, and then by Monday, it was just a fact and so the emotion surrounding it was way down.

Make your last day a Friday and give people in the office an excuse to kill an hour by giving you a cake and a thank you card.

In your resignation letter, make it short and sweet and don't burn any bridges. They'll be called upon at some point for references. Give your two weeks notice and get outta there.

I ended up writing a letter and turning it in as I left today. Now I just have five weeks to go.

Skywriting.

Or do it as part of a "Long-Distance Request" on Casey Kasem's radio show (is he still on the air anywhere? I don't know).

Tattoo on butt, then moon boss.

Overnight, fill the boss's office with pingpong balls with "I QUIT" written on them.

Or just leak it to a reporter from Fox News (of course, you'll have to lie and say your boss is Barack Obama).

But the best way... Singing Telegram.

Congrats, drezdn.

Really, there's no real great way to resign. There are obvious bad ways, but I think it's kind of hard to leave a job without there being some amount of anxiety/consternation/whatever.

I'd be clear that it's because they wouldn't let you work from home. Maybe they'll cave.
