Holy cow! I mean, really. Holy. Cow!

I love cupcakes a lot (what's not to love) but it just now struck me that the reason they have such an aura of nostalgic wholesome cuteness is that they could only have come into existence in a society in which abundant numbers of women were employed in housewifery with high expectations for nurturing output.

"Mom has time to make a cake, right? So she should have time to make two dozen indvidually iced and decorated separate, tiny cakes! Right? ....Chocolate AND vanilla, please!"

Those are so awesome!

For my daughter's birthday one year I made twenty-some cupcakes each decorated with a lion face. But now that she's in public school, we're not allowed to send in cupcakes anymore. :-( We're supposed to stick to "healthy" snacks like pretzels and goldfish crackers because sugar is evil but sodium is totally great.
