Hugh Janus, if you're out there, this one's for you. This one's for me. (and of course, they're for all you guys, too). This one, too. Just because.
The Sweet are one of the most underrated bands of all-time and the ultimate example of glam-rock as bubblegum pop with distorted guitars and sexual ambiguity (this is a good thing). "Little Willy," "Wig Wam Bam" "Ballroom Blitz," classics all.
Indeed they did. The whole British glam movement was a great pop moment. You had aesthetes like Bowie and T-Rex, sardonic intellects like Mott The Hoople and yobbos like Slade all under the same umbrella. Quite a coup.
The Sweet are one of my favorite bands - and I equally love their goofy bubblegum ("Alexander Graham Bell" and "Little Willy") and their more rocking glam. "Action" might very well be my favorite glam rocker, and "Fox on the Run" is also a classic that needs more attention.
I saw Sweet on their reunion tour (15 years ago I'm thinking)and it was a blast. They encored with "Ballroom Blitz" - twice ("Who wants to hear it again?!?"). The only problem with the show was that seemed to be wearing the same tight leather gear they did a decade earlier and...well....let's just say they had put on a few pounds over the years. A highlight of the show was watching Jim Ellerson from Material Issue (who covered several Sweet songs) standing by the side of the stage mouthing the words to just about every song and air drumming. As much fun as I was having, I could see that he was in nirvana getting a chance to finally see one of his favorites.
And jon - I love to see 10cc getting some love. I think they're greatly underrated.
Not that you asked, but here's my favorite Sweet song. It's got it all - a grand sense of fun, several great guitar riffs, a killer sing-a-long chorus, and a cash register.
And as a bonus for any Sweet fans craving a German pop cover of their 1971 single "Alexander Graham Bell", here you go. I know nothing about this version (or where I even got it from), but it's pretty faithful to the original. And here's a poorly synched lipsync of Sweet doing the song for your compare and contrast purposes.
