Lately I keep playing and re-playing Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies album, which reminded me[More:] of this story, about Salvador Dali's 360-degree hologram (made in 1973, around the time of BTB) of Alice Cooper wearing around 2 million dollars worth of jewelry, complete with tiara. I remember hearing about this when I was a kid (being a fan of holograms, and later of Mssrs. Cooper and Dali).

Anyway, for your Friday night rockin', here are a few more tracks from that excellent, excellent album:

Elected
Hello, Hooray
No More Mister Nice Guy

...and on a tangentally related note, Sonic Youth's cover of Cooper's "Is It My Body."
Pretty cool with the Sonic Youth cover. Thanks!

For me, School's Out was his best album, with Killer and Love It To Death as runners up. I thought he kind of turned soft and more pop after that. But No More Mister Nice guy was also a favorite of mine.

I loved BDB when it was first released, but not until 1988 did I realize its brilliance. I could write a book on that album, but I won't here. I will say that although I rarely pay much attention to the drummer, Neal Smith's drumming on BDB is often quite melodic, especially on the song "Billion Dollar Babies".

"The song "Maryanne" was originally written as a Vietnam protest song! The lyrics went something like this: "Uncle Sam, I'm really sad about you, indeed I am. I just can't be around you, Uncle Sam. I thought you were...a man."
(Michael Bruce on the phone to a Sickthing, March 1997)

This is the only Alice Cooper song I have found trippy enough to suit my needs.

Alice still hands head and shoulders above the shock-rockers who came after him.

Wow, I don't think that I've listened to that album in 25 years. We played the hell out of it my freshman year in college but I'd pretty much forgotten about it.

I just relistened to boxset not that long ago and had forgotten how many great songs he had. And I still have love for one of the most ridiculous songs in Alice's catalog, "I'm Alive (That Was The Day My Dead Pet Returned To Save My Life)" off of Zipper Catches Skin. I'm not saying it's Alice at it's best, but it always make me happy. A sample lyric:

I was spitting in the canyon
Near the cliff up on the mountain
When an unexpected sneeze
Hung me in the breeze
At forty five degrees in the sky
Suddenly I felt something
Had me by the belt
And in between my praying
Swore I heard a stallion neighing
Was the ghost of my horse
And I cried, yes I cried
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life

Oh yeah, that's poetry.
