Oops, I don't think he quite said what he meant: "Do you think your next-door neighbor should have an Oozie, an AK-47? Any type of gun? Do you really believe that? Good luck. But don't call the police if they're shooting an AK-47 in their back yard." - Chicago's Mayor Daley. So, police in Chicago are going to stop responding to gun incidents? Bad choice of words, mayor.
I don't really care if my next-door neighbor has an Oozie or not, so long as he keeps the curtains closed while he's doing it.

Yeah, "Oozie" was the icing on that cake.

I'd say it's more of a bad choice of copyeditor on the part of NBC5.com

So they're rerunning "Oozie and Harriet" in Chicago these days? That's nice.

With every school shooting, I can bank on some co-worker of mine commenting "well now I guess they'll come for our guns." I mean, it's a sure bet for me, starting with Thurston, which, for a few terrifying minutes, looked like it might be in one of the schools that is in my district. Even while it seemed like it happened at one of our schools, rather than, (as it turned out) in the neighboring school district, one of my bosses says, "well now they'll come for our guns." Who THEY are, who the hell knows.

But Columbine, Virginia Tech, the others, I have heard someone around my office make that comment.

But I have seen gun owners have those reactions, a LOT. It's like, gosh kids wounded and dead, schools shot up, lives turned upside down, the horror of that happening in a school, and all they think about is themselves and the sanctity of them being able to own whatever firepower they feel best validates them as worthy human beings.

So forgive me if I don't share anyone's glee (the NRA people look, in the pictures, like they just won the Super Bowl) about the Supreme Court decision today. I do not want your fucking gun. I just want fewer of them out there, and fewer of them freely available to whoever wants to kill people they do not know with them.

I'll be my job (literally) to clean up the blood and other tissues from the scene, if it happens in one of my schools.

dersins: "... don't call the police if they're shooting an AK-47 in their back yard" is a direct quote I heard this morning on msnbc.

I was referring to NBC5's decision to render the work "uzi" as "oozie," not to the content of the quote.

Obviously, Mayor Daley was saying good luck having a civilized society with those kinds of weapons. He's saying don't call us if people are using their AK-47s to shoot beer cans in their back yard.

Obviously, y'all probably already know what his intention was, but I had to come in and say it anyway. :-)

I guess Daley doesn't know that Uzis and AKs are already legal and widely available throughout the United States. Their sales among private traders are largely unregulated in many states. True, they may be semi-automatic but that is basically meaningless since their maximum rate of fire is far higher than most experienced gunners can pull the trigger.

If someone is firing off an AK in the middle of Chicago, I doubt that they are shooting beer cans. Given Daley's statement and your interpretation, perhaps he just legalized firing guns in the city limits?

Drat, I left this out.

My neighbor owns a legal AK-47. I held it for collateral on a $50 loan. My brother owns a legal Uzi. He still shoots it quite often despite that he is legally blind.
