Goddamn puppy breath. [More:]I went around and around trying to decide about getting another dog after Lacey died. I was heartbroken, I was lonely, but I didn't want my reason for getting another dog was that I missed Lacey. How soon is too soon, how will I know I'm ready?

I talked it over with friends and family and got a good mixed reaction. My mother thought two months would be a good amount of time, my friend thought I was crazy for not having one immediately, my partner thought it might help, my coworker thought I needed to give my heart a break.

I was leaning more toward waiting a bit. Until. My coworker announced that her miniature schnauzer / blue heeler mixed litter were right at 8 weeks and she was needing homes for them. All it took was some puppy breath and last night I brought a puppy home. I won't claim that I didn't cry a little seeing the puppy eating right where Lacey did, lying in Lacey's spots. But it's nice having another tiny warm body in the apartment.

She's 1.05 lbs, about 8 inches long. We haven't known her long enough to know her personality more than she loves people and likes to eat, pee, and sleep. Just like any baby.

And just like any baby, she needs a name.
Raisin!

I know I had the same thoughts as you after my best buddy ever Moondog. Like you I got different advice from different people. I was half heartedly looking, and I came across this "accidental" litter of Aussies a breeder had. I looked at them, and they were cute, and there was this one little Blue Merle boy I especially liked. Unfortunately there were more than twice as many reservations than there were puppies, but she said there was a chance there might be one left over since a lot of people were going to want the same dog. Finally I got the call that there was one Blue Merle boy left, and it was the little guy I first fell for. That's how I got Silver the Super dog. So ultimately I think it isn't about how long of a mourning period you need, it's that the right dog will find you. Puppy breath certainly heals a lot of hurt.

Congratulations on a sweet beautiful new puppy. Quite an interesting combination, and lovely little girl. I'm sure you two will have a great bond together.

(Great photo too BTW)

Aw, Silver was destined to be yours. I love stories like that.

I'm interested in seeing how the schnauzer/heeler mix works out. Some of the puppies definitely looked more blue heeler, and some looked more schnauzer. I hope she doesn't start shedding, but I tugged on her hair and nothing pulled out. I'm expecting an extremely smart and obstinate dog.

I've been calling her Half Pint and Home Slice, but I do like Raisin. Other names suggested by family, Twitter, and Flickr:
Wilhelmina
Mulligan
Pockets
Dolly
Ewok
CeeCee
Madge
Mimi
Dolce
Keiko
Teek
Puddles

She is such a cute puppy! Congrats, rhapsodie.

I just want to call her Baby Dog or or Shugashug.

If she ends up being Raisin, her middle name could be "Hell" or "Objections" to match her personality.

Raisin has unfortunately been vetoed by The Boy. He's lobbying hard for Mulligan and even has supposed "sponsors". I think I will lobby just as hard for Madge the Wonder Whuffler.

Olio
Poppy
Olive
Pimento (hee) (no)

Boo to The Boy! How can she not be Raisin with those eyes?...and won't she be primarily YOUR dog?

You must go with Olive. Absolutely. Then, at Xmas time, she can be Olive, the Other Reindeer.

Apparently when The Boy came to bed last night I was sound asleep with a face full of teeny puppy butt. Pushy little thing was lying on my pillow.

She shall be called Olive, Olio (for hodgepodge) for 'short'.

In a few months after all of my yelling at her to "Stop Chewing On Everything Goddammit!" I'm sure a middle name will surface.
