A Free Day in SF Daughter registering. I am alone and carless in the neighborhood of SF State.

What should I do?
Go watch all the gay marriages at City Hall and cheer for them? I'm sure your daughter would approve.

Assemble a care package of treats from some tasty SF eateries. It's all the way on the other side of the city and I don't know how much time you have, but you could take the Muni Metro from SF State (Line M, toward Embarcadero) over to the Ferry Building (keep walking toward the bay/east when you exit the station and you'll see it, a huge white building with a wannabe-Venetian clock tower with lots of food stalls inside) and kit out a little basket of stuff for her. Other SF bunnies might have a better way to get there or another suggestion for a foodie-centered spot. Congrats to your daughter!

I would go to Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park. Maybe lounge at the Park Chalet with a snack or a cocktail, and go to the Conservatory of Flowers or the De Young. There's a lot to do in the park.

I am here in the library on a one-hour guest pass. Stupidly, I thought that I could get on the wireless network here, but no.

I am going to take the 28 bus up through the park and then just wander around the neighborhoods north of the park. Maybe catch a bus to the beach.

We have a free day tomorrow and Daughter has never seen Japan Town, or whatever the Japanese section is called.

This campus has a lot of soviet-style concrete buildings, but the grounds are pretty.

On second thought, the M line goes TO city hall. .so going there to gawk and descreetly shoot some candids of happy couples. . and hopefully not get punched!

Hey, not to hijack or anything, but I wanted to tell danf that I just got word that my daughter was accepted to Girls Rock! camp here in DC. Rock!

mrmoonpie. . .you will cry when she takes the stage during the showcase (if there is one)

I guarantee it.

Dude, you didn't tell us you'd be in town! If I'd known, I'd have come met you for a beer. Alas, it's too late.

danf, I cried at the movie, and my daughter actually wrote about that in her application essay. I'm tearing up now thinking about it. The performance is at the 9:30 Club, a pretty major venue. I will bring a hankie.

My biggest reservation? Her 13th birthday is next week, and I want to surprise her then. How can I hold onto this news for a whole week?!?

Again--ROCK!

Pup, I am flattered that you would want to. No worries. . plenty more opportunities. . .

(such as tomorrow). . .(or this fall)

Are you around tomorrow? Email me and/or post!

Mats, brilliant suggestion. I spent midday at city hall then took daughter there at the end of the day. Pics on Flicker when I get back home. Very very happy.

Occhi, here tomorrow, back in the city farting around with kid. Call me (number in that email) if you want to meet up. I could tomorrow night also. I am staying in Oakland (s_r?) near the lake.

Tomorrow: Kahlo exhibit at MOMA, the beach, then Amoeba music in the Haight. All on public transit. Should be an adventure.

danf, I think SFMOMA is closed on Wednesdays; you may want to double-check that. If you need a museum replacement, the Chihuly exhibit at the deYoung (in GG Park) looks like it should be spectacular, and the Asian Art Museum is always very cool.

SFMoMA is indeed closed on Wednesdays. They are also having people buy tickets in advance for specific visiting hours for the Kahlo exhibit since they expect huge throngs of people.

i wish i knew when museums were the most empty.
Who do you have to know to get in after hours?

If you want to go downtown, the Contemporary Jewish Museum just opened last weekend. The building seems very neat; I haven't heard reviews on the exhibits yet.

Oops, ignore that last comment. CJM is also closed on Wednesdays.
