Ask MeCha: wireless router that doesn't suck? [More:]

so, we (sort of) have teh internets back at chez lfr. Except for when our Netgear router is acting flaky.

Simple issue: we need fast, reliable wireless to play nice with both machines. Wired/Cat5 isn't really an option, owing to house logistics. I have a macbook pro circa. 2 years ago, he has an old crappy Windows 2000 desktop circa about 1999. Owing to the obsolescence of his machine, I dunno that a wireless-N device would work too great.

The netgear works... sort of... except when it doesn't. It tends to just randomly/intermittently drop the signal, and sometimes it loads v e r y s l o w l y . . . and we've tried fussing with the antenna and it's not a proximity issue (it does it with my macbook when I'm sitting right next to the damned thing) but it was free, so we weren't inclined to look a gift horse, etc...

prior to that, we had a Dlink that just Didnotwork.

at this point money's not really an issue, I'm tired of fighting with it, I just want the damned connection to work, plug-n-play, no futzing around with it. Dear wireless geek gurus, link me to your awesome, plz!

We have Comcast DSL, for the record.
I have a d-link, I like it, and they're one of the few who out of the box support both PC and Mac. I personally wouldn't use Linksys, just because they're a lot more complex to set up, more than they should be for the home user, IMO.

I don't know if wireless G would even work with Win2K. You may need to find a router that has backwards compatibility and get him a used older wireless card for his computer.

I have one of those Qwest Actiontec routers and have had no problems with it.

Once every few months, I need to reset it, which means unplugging it and letting it boot up again.

What I DO notice is that the new MacBook, while it works with it, does not seem to have lightening page loading. But then I have the "slow" Qwest DSL.

But the Actiontec has been good for a few years now.

I've got an old WRT54G w/DD-WRT on it. Even w/the stock firmware, though, it's pretty nice.

I've found the Apple Airport Express to be far more stable than Netgear/Linksys/etc stuff. I've got the older non-n version, which you should be able to pick up for cheap or on eBay.

Seconding DD-WRT. I had a Linksys that was a total POS until I put DD-WRT on it.

I like cheap linksys routers. And DD-WRT.

It really sounds like you need to find a new channel - the kind of issues you are attributing to the Netgear sound like interference.

Try changing your next router's wifi channel to 3 or 9 or something other than 6.

I have 2 d-links that work just fine. Wireless G or any wireless will work just fine with win 2K. You just need a compatible receiver card. I have never had problems with wireless routers, only with shitty receivers.

(Before I had the Linksys, I had an old PC running Freesco. It was the best router I've ever had, but this is definitely the making-your-own-blocks solution.)
