Woooo! I enjoy muxtape. It's like online radio in installments.
Hey speaking of muxtape, and speaking of teh rawk, would you know of any good songs that'd fit in well with the songs I got up here? I wanna flesh it out a bit but I lack anything good/related.
I love Earth too, BoP! Sometimes they appeal to my (slowly) rockin' side, and occasionally to my drone-y Brian Eno/Coil/Spiritualized side. (There's also that one album cover that I just freakin' love.) I still don't have their new one, but bmarkey says it's good.
I saw the Melvins open for Tool, once. It was... interesting. Kind of an anti-warm-up act.
CitrusFreak, I'm getting into the idea of "radio installments," too, even though I didn't like the idea at first. As for your songs.. I'm going to have to listen to them, because I don't recognize any of 'em by name! (I've a least heard of Eagles of Death metal, though.) I'll give it a listen tonight or in the morning, and see if I can think of any good companion songs for those.
That's why I do it, CF! I don't want people to think they have to make a thread every time, I just know *I* want to know when people update their muxtapes, so I'm trying to lead by example, or something. :)
BoPo - please keep posting when you update. It inspires me to rebuild mine (which I'm doing now) and I'll repost.
I like everything on you newest mux, but there were two selections that totally ,kicked my ass seeing them on there. "Memphis Egypt" is a motherfucker of a song and has one of my favorite guitar intros ever. And I was real glad to see the Donner Party, and greatly under appreciated band. Nicely done as always.
I updated my muxtape as well, this time keeping in the spirit of BoPo's guitar mux. I went a bit more testosterone charged than normal because that's the way the mood hit me at the moment.
Can't wait to check out your muxes, Slack and misteraitch ... I had a doctor appt. this morning that ate up most of my day, so I'm just now getting back to this thread.
misteraitch, I added you to the wiki- hope that's cool with you!
Slack, the Mekons are old favorites of mine, though I didn't get into them till the 90s- that album (The Mekons Rock and Roll) was my introduction to them, in fact, and is still one of their best IMO. And the Donner Party- yeah, they got me through college. Two amazing albums, then pfft! Gone.
syntax, did you record this Earth mp3?? Too cool. I'm streaming it now, but will have to download this one to keep.
BP - yes. That was from their in-store appearance in Greenville, SC on May 2nd. They didn't have a vocal PA (they don't really need one), which is why the band and song introductions are barely audible. I used binaural mics built into a set of eyeglass straps (seen here), so if you're wearing headphones you can totally hear whenever turn my head. :)
I also recorded their show in Asheville that same night, but it didn't turn out as good.
I'm not that good - as evidenced by my attempt to record the X show that I bumped into MGL at a couple of weeks ago. I plugged the mics into the line-in jack on my Edirol R-09 instead of the mic-in jack and ended up recording about 75 minutes of silence. My heart sank when I loaded that into my WAV editor the next morning and saw nothing but flatline. :(
But yeah, operator problems aside, those are some good mics.
And the Donner Party- yeah, they got me through college. Two amazing albums, then pfft! Gone.
In case you're not aware, Sam Coomes, the leader of the Donner Party, went on to form Quasi, who have several very good albums.
And there is a THIRD Donner Party album that sat unreleased for 10 years until it came out on a double CD with the first two albums. The third record isn't as good as the first two, but if you're a fan, it's worth hearing. And for bonus trivia, the Donner Party's drummer, Melanie Clarin, went on to play in the Catheads, who's album I recently listened to again and was surprised at how well it stood up.
Ah! I just spotted your comment, Slack... I did know about the third DP album (I got those CDs the day they came out!!) but I didn't realize Quasi was Sam Coomes. Cool! I will have to check them out.
